I have two LCDs, one Sony and the other LG. I love them both. You cant go wrong with either a plasma or LCD.

Plasma will have brighter colors but you can't beat some of the new thin models which are so much lighter and burn less energy.

Plasmas have the darker blacks.

With that said, I bought one of the new LED's and absolutely love it.

LCD was the best option for me. I heard gaming on a LCD is far better than a Plasma, so I went that route.

Best post yet. LED is hands down the best of the three, but they are pricey. But in line with gvc's podt, you'll be blown away by any of the 3. Make sure to use hdmi cables. When I get home tonight I'll post a website that has fantastic deals on a/v cables.

Monoprice is definitely the place for cables.

I'm partial to the LED DLP, but they don't seem to be selling them anymore. All going flat now. Love the hell out of mine though.

I personally recommend Samsung, but you can't go wrong with Sony or Pioneer (for Plasma). Don't really know anything about any of the other brands. Milo should have :twocents: about this.

I think that if you can buy a great plasma, don't go cheap, for movies and sports, go for it. If your EVER thinking about expanding to gaming, get a LED.

I have a Samsung 55' LED and its awesome, its literally an inch tick, super light, uses like 40% less energy than a plasma (means it will last longer) and the color is more crisp than a plasma. The glare off the screen (sunsetting through a window) is reduced dramatically.

Stay away from the orginal LG LED, its the same price as the samsung but not nearly as good

The biggest issue is can you control the light in the room you will have the TV. If you can't, go with LCD or LED. If you can, plasma is the way to go, especially for sports and movies.

Eric is right about one thing; if you expand to games, stay away from plasma because the static images in the background will "burn in" to the screen

LED's are LCD's with the difference being on how they're lit. Meaning you have a LCD panel being lit two separate ways:
Traditional LCD TVs use CCFL backlights (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) - think thin fluorescent tubes with a diffusing panel inside to spread the light evenly around the screen. Meanwhile, Samsung's "LED TVs" (or to be more precise, LED-lit LCD TVs) use LED elements for the lighting source (think "Lite Brite" pegs, but all of them white). Samsung is trying to promote this LED backlighting technology as an entirely new category of TV, which is a little misleading.
You can read the article where the quote came from here: How is Samsung LED TV Different From LCD HDTV?: BigPictureBigSound

I own two plasmas and frankly wouldn't own an LCD but that's just me. Mostly my plasmas are used for Blu-Ray and television programming but I do from time to time play games on them as well. I haven't had any issues with image burn while playing the games. Like I said though, I'm not a full-time gamer spending hours at time playing.

A possible con with plasmas are that it's recommended that they're broken in for at least 100hrs before normal viewing. Meaning you should not leave any logos or black bars on the screen during the first 100hrs of use. The zoom function takes care of the bars and the logos are usually taken care of by commercial breaks. After the break in period you're fully set to enjoy the full capabilities of the tv.

Oh, never lay any plasma flat during transport but instead keep them upright.

Whatever you decide on I'm sure you'll enjoy it for years to come.

How about some advice on projectors? I'm trying to get ideas on a theater screen when we build next year...

I don't have any personal experience with projectors or the screens.

You can take a look over at AVS display forums: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=9

I use AVS mainly to see if there are any issues with something I'm going to buy as their users usually post threads outlining them.

^ Niche and not worth the money. Has as about as much chance of lasting as 3D movies, which is to say nil, because theaters are hurrying up to re-do their big time summer titles in 3D. The translation will come out bad and they will all suck, guaranteed. The current iteration of 3D will be nothing more than a piece of trivia in 5 years.

As for TV monitors, LCD or plasma could work for you depending on your situation. Tell us about the room it's going into, lighting situation, living space, seating arrangement, etc.

Gaming on a plasma looks great BUT images can become burned into the screen if you game long enough on it. Safer to game on an LCD or LED.

I have a 37' LG lcd and a 42' Samsung plasma. Love them both. Only way you go wrong with purchasing a tv is by brand. Get any of the below and you are good to go;

LG
Samsung
Panasonic
Sharp
Sony

^ Basically false. Image burn-in is pretty much a non-issue on all modern plasmas under all modern circumstances unless you leave one image on while you're on vacation or something.
