Least penalized team in the SEC

Wasn't Butch's 1st team in 2013 the least penalized in the SEC as well?

2nd or 3rd in the country as I recall. Seems like 2014 was up there as well. For some reason it deteriorated in 16 and 17 to one of the worst.

Good sign but most of the penalties are pre snap or after the play. Those are real bad penalties. Imagine if they could eliminate those.

This is certainly very positive...on top of what seems to be a team getting better. However, #1 in penalties, #1 fans, #1 training facilities, #9 all time wins, most wins all time vs Bama, etc, etc...I'm just ready for the year when we can finally say we're ranked at/near the top of the current SEC standings in wins, and any other good or bad stats that come along with that is fine with me. But, think we're heading in the right direction, and start to make some moves next year.

Looks good but in reality, Vandy is the least penalized as they have played one more game with less penalty yards and only one more penalty.

Still, when you have a 30 or more yard advantage in penalties that can make a huge difference in a game, especially if it means 2 more first downs or a couple of more punts by opponent.

From the looks of that graphic, I’d say we’re the second least penalized team behind Vandy.

I just shared it gents. I have no skin in the game

I’ll take any positives right now. I wonder who leads the league in dumbest penalties? Targeting ejections? Personal fouls? That would be an interesting article.

We don't get many penalties. We have, however, tended to get them at terrible times. It makes it seem like it happens more often. That and the 3 in row we got for lining up to punt wrong.

Fake news. How does it take till the 2nd page for someone to calculate penalties per game?? We are 4th. Freaking sheep.

Also, when you're down by 4 or 5 touchdowns, the refs let a few things slide, especially holds and things like that.

I guess that's a positive in general but when I think of SEC officiating, I think of all the calls they don't make. At least that's what I always seem to be mad about. So when I see we're the least penalized, what's the first thing I think of? That our OL obviously isn't holding enough.

:p

Too bad all the UT penalties are drive killers for us or drive extenders for the other teams.

This is always an interesting topic. I could be wrong, but it seems like every year the best teams in the SEC and the country commit lots of penalties and the worse teams do not commit as many. Maybe it has something to do with the aggressiveness? I don't know.

A lot of 3 and outs will cut down on penalties such as off sides holding etc.. One of Butch's teams were lauded for having so few penalties cant remember which year but believe it was his first. So sometimes these ststs don't mean as much as some would like.

Just at a glance, this doesn't seem to be a significant stat. It looks to me like two teams have averaged 8 penalties a game, one team has averaged 7 penalties a game and 11 out of the 14 teams have averaged 5-6 penalties a game. We're one of the 11.

Yay.

Hey, we gotta win something.

That's a good point. Less offensive plays means less opportunity for typical penalties - illegal procedure, false start, holding, etc.

This is evidence that we are playing more diciplined football. Dicipline translates to execution eventually. It is difficult to see now, but I truly believe that very few penalties means that our players are more aware of how they are supposed to play the game by scheme and position. This lack of penalties will be the difference in winning or losing games when the skill and depth of our players developes. My hypothesis is that next season we will be in close games and win them because the other team makes more untimely mistakes.

Are the Vols too hospitable and too nice to the oposition, so it seems, grow some bigungs Vols and play mad as hell for a change

It's funny, the notion of playing mean reminds me, I remember as far back as junior high our coach would teach offensive linemen things like how to sneak in an uppercut punch under the chinstrap to the DL guy without the ref catching it. He'd go into detail about angle of the fist, swinging up from inside rather than outside, how to disguise it into the motion of coming up to engage out of stance. But there was always the idea of adding punishment to play but without obvious penalties. I always wondered if every team got coached that way or if our coach was just one of those guys.

Dirty play is weak sauce. Just whip the guys tail within the rules all the way down the field.....then pick him up and say, “I’ll be right back”.
