Last year my wife learned football. She bought Holly Robinson Peete's book "Get Your Own Damn Beer, I'm Watching the Game -- A Woman's Guide to Football" and read it cover to cover.

She now watches the games with me and is even starting to pick up on penalty calls before I tell her what they are. (Previously we were having to pause the game, rewind, and I would get up and explain in slow motion.)

Definitely coming along. I'm quite proud. :hi:

The next step: an education on Volunteer (football) history. Recommendations?

Will also serve as a refresher course for me as well.

I'm looking for stuff from the beginning all the way. Things on and off the field (e.g. we know how Smokey got picked). Big plays. Critical plays that led to wins/losses.

The "what if..." thread got me thinking about this.

Greatly appreciate the help! We'll have her doing keg stands just yet...

You may be able to Wiki something on Tennessee football. I am not sure how far back UTSports.com goes. I would Google all I could on it.

I dated Bob Woodruffs granddaughter, he was the AD who hired dicky I think. He also coached Baylor and Florida. He had already passed by the time we were dating but I got to see his home and all of the awards. Really good family, good innocent girl too, after we quit dating she married a fighter jet pilot, she got a sweet trade there.

Pick this up. It's about $40, and is tremendous. I have the Michigan version. It's entertaining, has a lot of pictures and some pop-out things like old programs, pennants and the like.

in response to one of your questions, according to the NCAA 09 video game, smokey was chosen as the mascot in 1953, when several blue tick hound dogs were brought out onto the field. When smokeys name was announced, he started barking really loud and the crowd loved it, and he became the mascot.

^this would probably do the trick if you're willing to fork over the money for it. i have it, and it has a good deal of info and stories in it.

if you don't want to give up that much cash though, a simple ut media guide has a good deal of information and history detailed in it. if you get one of these though, i recommend you get one that was made prior to the 2008 season since it seems that they started taking alot of content out in last year's version.

Has she told you to get your own damn beer yet? If so, maybe you have over educated her. :whistling:

Find you a copy of " The Third Saturday In October " it's a chronicle of the TN vs Alabama football rivalry, it is required reading for the serious about TN football fan.

Try "TENNESSEE FOOTBALL" by Athlon Sports. I have the book and it covers the greatest players, coaches, plays, games, seasons and traditions.

Just picked up a copy of the football vault on Amazon (used) for $9 including $4 shipping.

They have also released an updated version that goes through 2008, but I figured through 2006 was a good enough start on the history. Thanks for the help.

My girlfriend of several years probably knows as much, maybe more, about the rules and procedure of football as I do and she probably knows the history of some teams more thoroughly than I but thankfully she is gracious and wise enough to keep it to herself.

There was a book written around Johnny Majors 2nd year at UT. Yes, very old, but it covers just about everything(it even shows an old bill for a UT trip to Chapel Hill in the 1890's), including the details about all the stories of the program from 1891 to around 1978.

I forget what it's called. I'll get back to you on that one. Meanwhile, there's a plethora of information on the internet about UT's storied history.

College Football History That's one I use a lot.

Russ Bebb wrote it, believe its called A History of Big Orange Football, or something like that. I've got a copy somewhere, but mine only goes up to 1972 or so.
