Last Year vs This Year

I also think we have an opportunity to surprise some of our opponents. I feel like we have a good chance to keep a lot of games close this year. While we might not necessarily always come up with the W, I do expect we'll be competitive and keep the score close even against better competition. Six or seven wins would be considered acceptable as "success" this season imo, eight or more would be exceeding expectations. All of the great coaches tend to exceed expectations, though there are some obvious outliers. Excited to see how we perform this year. Go Vols!

And for those discussing Shoop: Much like many of Butch's assistants and coordinators, he was a product of what he was allowed by Butch. Whereas Fulmer took the opposite approach, allowing autonomy amongst his staff, Butch went the opposite direction, directing to them what he wanted them to do. This is a sign of insecurity, and has no place in the mind of a football coach. The ability to delegate is one that's indicative of a leader. This tells me all I need to know about Butch as a HC. And as a result, many careers suffered, including that of Shoop.

I have battered Vol syndrome as well, but I firmly believe if we have the right coach this year, we will see major improvement vs last year. No more excusing a coach for lack of talent. I won't totally judge him by his record, but on improvement on both sides of the ball vs last year.

We have enough talent all around to be a solid team. Not all the pieces to make a run at an SEC championship, but enough that no one wants to play this team. If we don't see major improvement all around, I am afraid it will be 3 more years and we are looking again.

The only team we will have a chance to surprise is WV. After that game, they will know the color of the train that is on the tracks they are standing on. Orange and big. A Big Orange train about to mess them up.

I firmly believe when you look in-depth at this and break it down for what it is and what it's going to be.. and you dissect the months and days of it all, you will find that, in essence, last year was 2017 and this year factors to be 2018.
Yes. Things will look a lot more like they used to than they do now.

Doug Matthews said this today on his show..

A confused player is a bad player..

Under Jones.. We had the talent.. But improper coaching with fundamental and techniques..

Pruitt and staff are spending a lot of time teaching.. Making players redo drills until it's second nature.. They don't want confused players.. They want them to play hard a fast imo...

Anyway.. Just a interesting comment..

Makes sense. The OL looked confused every year after the first one... when there were whispers that the holdover OL's from Pittman basically ignored a lot of what Jones and Mahoney tried to "teach" them. Of course many Kool-Aid drinkers declared this part of the "stench" of Dooley that was holding Jones back from being "great".

Poor coaching, poor strength and endurance. Stupid play calling. We had it all last season.

You know though it is weird. The same thing was said when Jones took over for Dooley. I suspect that guys lost discipline after they knew the coach was going to be gone.... but IMHO Jones' prescription for S&C was to his scheme... and a big part of why his scheme didn't work. I do not think that all of the guys who worked as coaches or S&C for Jones were bad at their jobs. IMO, his way of doing things made them bad.
When your primary philosophy in coaching is to out scheme or try to fool the other team, you aren’t going to win many games.

My take was that Jones thought clichés were effective coaching. I'm not being totally facetious.

2015 his last season was abysmal and gave up massive rushing yards and points. 55 to Mich state. But he’s gone so who cares. Let him go and suck at MSU
26th in the country in scoring defense...21.8ppg

43rd (out of 130 teams) in the country in rush defense.

8th in the country in pass defense

14th in the country in total defense.

Bad games happen to every coach, every program, clearly the game vs Michigan State was bad. But in totality, how in any way was his defense in 2015 at Penn State abysmal?

If you love him so much go root for him. His rush defense was in the decline and it continued here. He wasn’t anything that special when he got here and I think he is a flash in the pan. Like I said, let him go suck at Miss State now

As Vol fans our focus is always on our team and rightly so. However, the biggest reason I think the Vols can get to 6 wins or more is they don't have to be the '98 NC's to win a number of games on their schedule. Vandy, Kentucky, Florida, even UWV and Missouri are not good football teams if your criteria is winning games. Throw in Charlotte, ETSU, and UTEP and there are certainly 6 wins in that schedule if the players they have can stay relatively healthy and play to their ability. So we can still suck when compared to the elite teams and have a winning record. JMHO
