hey guys,
I was hoping someone on here could help me. My wife and I were coming back from photographing a wedding this weekend and cut on the laptop to look at the pictures. At first the laptop came on, with no screen, but with fans-and just sat there. I cut it off and back on via the power button and it cut on as normal. 3 hours later here at home and I've turned it off and on several times and all I get is fans, an initial hd spin sound, and no screen. I've hooked up the external screen and haven't gotten a signal either. Right now it's sitting with the battery out for 5 minutes in hopes that it will start. Any ideas? I HAVE to have the info off the hard drive, as that's the place we dump our wedding pictures before home. The computer surviving isn't as big of a deal, but there are several gb's of pictures on the HD that must be saved. Thanks all.

Worst case scenario is you have to get an external enclosure to put the drive in and get them off that way. I assume you have XP. If you have the XP disk you can try a repair install. Will it boot into safe mode?

I can't get anything to happen at all. I'm thinking about the external thing but I wasn't sure if that would work with a laptop hd. Right now its sitting with the internal "watch" battery out. The pictures on there are what matters, they are worth way more than the laptop anyway. Think they have that enclosure at walmart or should I try best buy tomorrow.

Best Buy. The enclosure you would need supports 2.5" drives (a laptop drive)

I don't want to scare you, but it is very likely that the HDD is the component that is broken. Good luck.

Well, thankfully I'm up and running right now. Reseting the cmos via an internal battery pull worked. I'm currently pulling important files off as I'm still not sure what caused this. Thanks for the help guys.

The drive may be the culprit. But putting it as an external may let you get your data off. Also, download Panda Recovery software. Pretty good for a free app.
