I scanned the forums and saw no thread for this article. If anyone mentioned the article, it is buried where I couldn't find it---apologies, if that is the case.

John Brice did a Q&A with Kiffin and it offers insight none of today's newspaper articles revealed---great stories and quotes.

1) TN is a special place:

He said that things started sinking in when he heard people calling into an A.M. radio show and discussing the LB's coach at another SEC school. He was apparently blown away TN people would even know the name of a LB's coach, much less how solid he was at recruiting. (doesn't name the coach by name) He also seems moved by that kind of passion in the middle of the offseason.

2) overlooked economic factors

Kiffin also mentions some of the sacrifices the coaches have made to join the Tennessee program. With the economic situation and a poor housing market, the coaches are expected to take big losses on houses they're forced to sell. This had to take some strong communication skills to persuade people to uproot their families and start fresh some place new---another example of Kiffin's powers of persuasion and his excellent recruiting skills.

3) Patrick Turner:

Turner apparently ignored Kiffin's calls for six days, before picking up and saying, "I'm not coming to SC." Kiffin was undeterred and got Turner to sign with the Trojans anyways.

4) Ed Orgeron's recruitment

O told Lane, that he wasn't coming and Kiffin said,
"Hey, Ed, I really respect that, but you're still coming. I respect your decision, but I'm not quitting."

He claims Orgeron was outside upstairs when Lane and Monte showed up and when they were let in the house, O said "I'm coming" before they could get a word in.

Folk tales, exaggerations? I don't care---it was entertaining and refreshing to read.

Recap: He calls people when they screen his calls for six days. He never takes "no" for an answer. He is determined to get what he wants, despite complications. If he's still working prospects, the way he claims the Turner situation played out, then I don't feel we're out of it with anyone until they enroll at another school.

(It's 4am as I submit this, please forgive typo's...see you guys tomorrow.)

Thanks for sharing, Jack. I hope those qualities that seem to serve him well in the recruiting field transfer to success on the football field. I was particularly interested to read that about Patrick Turner. I wish I knew more about his situation. I hated losing him more than any other player I can remember and that hatred has never left.

I think a lot of people share your sentiments. Hey, if you can't beat them join them. Lane recruited probably the best prospect to come out of TN for several years. Now, we hire him to do the same to other schools!

thanks cool info. Now he's got though a month left to prove that he can actually do any of these things with this year's recruiting class

the article also briefly touches on LSU's counter-offer to Orgeron that was rumored to have been made. Lane says if you want to know more, you'll have to ask Ed about it.

I think it only got brought up so Kiffin could take a parting shot at LSU, since he's already taken shots at everyone else.

No more, Mr. Nice Guy. Very 'Alice Cooper' of him.
