Lane Kiffin and The Raiders

The defense was very good last year, no doubt about that, but it was aided by two very important factors:

1) We played some of the worst offensive teams in the country last year (We played four out to the bottom ten in scoring offense).

2) Teams were not aggressive on offense because they knew that it would only take 14-17 points to beat us.

Even with improvements, I doubt the defense will be ranked in the top 5 this year.

If you counted scrimmages, we played 5 of the 10

"Every slightly better than terrible offense they faced pretty much did whatever they wanted."

Really? So, despite great field position, UF scored one of their lowest scoring totals all year against UT. Florida's 3.8 yards per carry were their 3rd lowest all season and that 8-for-15 for 96 yards passing was one of Tebow's all-time passing lows. Georgia, with Moreno, averaged 3.3 yards per carry, their 3 lowest in the regular season, and couldn't put up TDs all day, despite a woeful UT offense. Those were the 2 best offenses we faced, and they both struggled despite easy field position all day.

While I do think you have a good arguement, the reason Tebow only had 96 yards and they didn't really have that many yards on offense is because UF spent most of the game on our side of the 50

Chow had him on the roster in 2003 and 2004.

Why are we arguing about Chow and Kiffin, both were great coaches at USC. Chows coaching abilities were way overshadowed by "coach killer" Vince Young with the Titans, and Kiffin abilities were overshadowed by the career killer franchise the Raiders.
Its not like we need a guy who can do the most with the least, like Utah or Miss State. We just need a guy who can win with some of the best players in the country. With the recruiters we have I dont think that we wont have a top 10 recruiting class every year. i think that once we get the new coaches players in Knoxville watch out. And to prove my point about how our old coaching staff sucked and Chow is great, just watch the UCLA game from last year. I have never seen a game so mismatched talent wise that has been lost like that. Rediculous!

Did you actually watch the UF game? Florida went on cruise-control midway through the second period. Mind you, I'm a rabid Vol fan, but Florida could have easily hung 60 on us.

Yes, we played Georgia tough. Well, our defense did. Enough has been said about the offense in '08, so I'll leave that topic alone.

Lest you forgot, we were 5-7 last year. Among those seven losses were teams like UCLA and Wyoming. Oh...and South Carolina.

I take no solace, or pride, in being "close" against UF and Georgia. Apparently, you do. This is the difference between us. You're okay with "close"...I expect to win.

Go Vols.

I never thought UGA's offense was that great, anyway. Moreno and AJ Green were really good and Stafford had a cannon, but it takes more than that. Look at how many points they put up against Florida, South Carolina, and Auburn. Not very many. They managed 30 against Alabama, which is good... but, that's with zero points in the first half and 20 of the 30 coming at the end when the game was already over.

I mean, we held UGA to 26 points. They managed 27 against Arizona State. Michigan State and Vandy both held them to 24.

I doubt our defense will rank 3rd again, but I bet we'll see more turnovers and we'll be less likely to blow a crucial stop.
