The Lady Vols lost the game 67-61, a 6 point difference. They were out scored by 10 points in the 4th quarter. What was the difference in the game? Turnovers. The Lady Vols had 14 turnovers from which UConn scored 16 points. That is the difference between winning and losing a game. I will say the 14 turnovers was a vast improvement on games where there have been over 20. A few less turnovers and the Lady Vols could have possibly beaten the #3 UConn team. The Lady Vols did a very good job rebounding. Another game test comes Sunday with Kentucky.

Well I admit that I was wrong on why they start Saurez after they allowed Jordan Walker to play many minutes. Neither one is a point guard and Suarez turns the ball over doing dumb things. How many times does she dribble the ball into the paint with taller players surrounding her and turning it over. She seldom gets back on defense but is is a fair shooter and Walker was 1 of 9, Horston is one of the laziest girls on the team unless she is scoring. If she has an off night on offense then there is no defense from her. Davis was a no show as well and she does a lot of the same thing drags on defense when her offense is off. I think with a point guard to run the team we would have been so far ahead we would have won even after they outscored us in the 4th. This is the best that I have seen them play against the best coached team in the country.

Amen! Amen! Amen! The Lady Vols did do a good job against UConn except when they were outscored by 10 point in the 4th quarter.

This team needs a leader at point guard. How can Kellie of all people not see this? They need a Kellie or Shanna or Kara. Horston needs to be a wing--with a short leash. Davis doesn't have the 'want to', Rhea (Rea?) is a warrior.

The difference was the 4th quarter,,,Brilliant and the "What?, Why?"

Brilliant was when we went zone and Geno had to call a timeout to bust the zone,,,when we came back in the floor we went man (to Geno'sd surprise and then went back to zone on the next bringdown,,,Brilliant Coach K!

"What? Why?",,,when Paige took the last three with 25 seconds left we had two fouls to give,,,had we used them late in the shot clock with a foul on the floor, they would have had no chance to get such a clean look....We fouled twice in a span of two seconds after that,,,missed opportunity here

Nah. Just Miles, Wynn is not a PG. I’m a bit nervous about Miles. She can score but she doesn’t seem to really run her team. Makes some slick passes but she’s not a true set up PG.
I'd be shocked if Miles is an immediate impact player as a freshman. Next year, I don't expect the gametime PG situation to be all that different from this year.

Why foul Paige? She was 0-5 from deep and they played spectacular defense for 23 seconds and left it for a freshman having a bad shooting night to make the backbreaking shot. Even though she made it, they played that possession perfectly. Can't remember if it was Evina or Christyn, but they made sure that they wouldn't get a good look.

...sobering thought...a transfer possibly? That door is open and swings both ways...

Those are good points, Coach J. Kellie and staff need to assess where they could have made better decisions, too.

Well, that's a good point, too. And Beuckers was hobbling around, so you wouldn't think she'd get much lift. Regardless, it's done.

If we make better decisions, box out, don't force passes, take better shots, hustle for long rebounds, etc. just a little better...we win this one.

Just got to keep grinding in practice. The signs of improvement are there.

Didn't see much passion from either team. The most emotion dispayed was from Beuckers after the late 3.

I never said foul page. I said they should have fouled deep in the shot clock so that the offense would have been hard-pressed to get a shot off. If they would have fouled with like 6 or 7 seconds left it would have been much harder to get an open look

Yes I thought this as well. I’m not sure why we didn’t. We had fouls to give and should have fouled the ball handler with 2 on the shot clock before the pass to Bueckers.

Could have re-set our defense and possibly gotten a steal or 5 seconds on the inbound.

Kellie must see something in her to give her an offer last year and great coaching once she arrives might do wonders for her

Nope. Based on this season so far I actually think Salary may be our starting PG next season. She doesn’t turn the ball over and she makes smart plays. She needs some experience and could do with putting some muscle on. Walker would be her backup.

Horston needs to move permanently to the 2. She can take over the point at end of quarters when we need a score but that’s about it. She is not cerebral enough to run Kellie’s offense. You can see her thinking wayyyyy too hard about what needs to happen and then she turns the ball over. Until she improves on the mental aspect of the game she’s not cutout to have the ball in her hands that much. Really think she could benefit from a sports psychologist. She was mentally frozen last night and it was hard to watch. She’s got to get passed that and just play basketball.

I have no expectation of Miles being college ready at the point. I think she’ll play similar minutes to DSal this season.

I’m certain she does! I see lots in her as well she is great at getting to the basket and the line. She is also a lockdown defender but only when she chooses to be. She’s going to have to learn to play 40 full minutes before she sees much time with Kellie.

Watching a few of her games she really does not command the floor though. We need a floor general who can keep us organized, calm everyone down and hit a big shot now and then.

Destiny Salary needs more minutes.
One of the most reliable cliches in sports, everyone's favorite quarterback, or point guard in this situation, is the one who's not currently playing.

Bottom line is we're still trying to make/fake a PG. Trying to do it by committee with 1 inexperienced at this level (Salary) one possibly over her head at this level (Walker) and one just plain out of position at this level (Horston). In the best of this situation, one plays exceptionally well, like Horston against Alabama, or they combine to play just well enough (Walker and Horston at Indiana). But the situation catches up to us when 2 of the 3 have bad games, like the Jordans last night.

Horston needs to move permanently to the 2. She can take over the point at end of quarters when we need a score but that’s about it. She is not cerebral enough to run Kellie’s offense. You can see her thinking wayyyyy too hard about what needs to happen and then she turns the ball over. I've always said, I'm not sure who ever thought JH was a college level PG, and have never been sure she actually wants to play the position. She probably played PG in high school just bc her scoring ability at that level dictated having the ball in her hands as quickly and often as possible. Not at this level though.

When we criticize JH, we have to remember she's playing out of position by necessity. Playing PG requires JH to literally do what she does worst, ball handling and decision making. Don't have to be super bright to see she would be much, much better at off guard which would play to her strengths, not her weaknesses.

I agree most of JH PG struggles are in the mental aspects. She is much like Rennia in that she gets frustrated with herself and shows it. In both cases, I vehemently disagree that has anything to do with lack of caring or lack of "wanting it" (perhaps the most nonsensical cliche in all of sports). In fact, in both cases I agree they are over thinking, over worrying and in JH case, fearful of being caught up once again in her bugaboo - turnovers. She makes herself a self-fulfilling t.o. prophecy.

A sports psychologist or just a coach very skilled in coaching headspace would probably help both Horston and Davis alot. Horston has played well a few times at PG and its possible with alot of work she could someday be servicable at the position, But IMO that's a real waste of her career, trying to make her over to fit a position that's not natural to her. She'd have a much better career playing off guard at least 80% of the time. I really, really hope she gets that opportunity. It will only happen this year if Walker becomes more reliable or the PG currently not playing, Salary, indeed turns out to be the magical solution.

I give Horston credit for setting a really good defensive tone. She fouls too much, especially those dumb fouls from behind after her player has gotten around her. But overall she's been one of our best defensive players, she rebounds well and leads the team by far with 20 steals. She makes important contributions, just not reliably from the PG position.
