O’Brien said he doesn’t mind his well-earned reputation as a so-called "lunch pail" guy who isn’t the biggest or fastest player but shows up every day to clock in a hard shift, but the 6-foot-2, 301-pound, camouflage-wearing, truck-driving Michigan native is a fierce competitor and leader who wants to improve.

With that in mind, O’Brien said he spent more time than ever this summer on becoming more of a quarterback-botherer in the backfield. He even used some of his rare free time and money this summer to that end.

“My big goal was pass rush, really,” O’Brien said. “I wanted to improve my get-off and everything that has to do with pass rush. I’ve worked with Coach Strip (Steve Stripling) a lot on it, and I actually took a little trip on our summer break and went down to Atlanta to work with Chuck Smith — who was actually the guy who recruited me here — and I got some good work in with him. He taught me some new things. I just focused on that, and really on getting vertical in the pass game and trying to collapse the pocket and bring an inside presence to our pass rush that’s already so great from the edge.”

Lack of defensive tackle depth nothing new for Tennessee Vols football's Danny O'Brien

O'Brien's not as talented as some on the Dline, but he's a pretty tough football player that just works and works
I like his toughness

Got to wonder when and how the team votes on Alexis Johnson? If he could handle 7 -10 snaps a game and build to 20 or so by seasons end that would be a help

I mean its like, Obrien you know...he is just another tough hombre from yankeeville...I mean he might not be as talented as some kids but lets face it...the boy is a hard worker..thats not afraid...to work at his craft...anyways...glad I could offer another take.....because I mean...I view it like this...to be simple...kid has little to no talent...but dammit...he works...you know.....again.....just how i view it.....GBO!!!

One of the last Dooley recruits, glad he has stuck around and hope he has a good year.

Kid has one helluva motor. I love watching him play. Wish we could bottle what he has and pour it into the rest of the defense.
