You are probably right. I’ve been a Vol fan for as long as I can remember and I’ve never seen this.
For a few years after Majors came in it was bad but you never got the impression that players didn’t “buy in”.

There’s a great dvd of Pat Ryan talking about how hard it was after Johnny and his staff took over.

Actually is does in a couple of senses. Weight training is cumulative , especially so if done naturally . Speed and agility training is like wise. So a kid comes in and has had little to no weight training for 2 years ( Butch ) and he starts working S&C for 8 months. He will get progress ...but he won't achieve the same results that a kid that has been doing it religiously for 3 years will have obtained. Likewise for the BEEP test and any other measurable improvable. To get the same results that a guy that has 2 or 3 years invested ...the kid will need 2 or 3 years. The same goes for fundamentals. This is the whole reason that a senior team is generally better than a freshman team , the time and reps. Butch didn't hold football 'practices' and did not have a real S&C program, so anyone on our team is basically in their freshman year of development. Just look at the injuries from last season to this season and you will see the result of the current S&C. This is not to mention that the O line was recruited small for spread based system and they are now running a power based system . The defensive line and LB's are very small for the 34 defense they are now charged with. They are behind on horsepower despite the SC program ….as strong as they get , they are still undersized and not as strong as needed.

By the way, I remember going to Tennessee games years ago and as we entered knoxville we would be listening to Bobby on the radio. Don't remember the station but it was so enjoyable. Really got you up for the game.

Mullen did . Saban won 1 more regular season game than his predecessor and suffered a humiliating loss his first year with Bama. Myer won 1 more regular season game his first season than Zook's last . You have guys like Mullin and Harbaugh that have a lot of success out of the gate. Obviously with the examples above , the first season is not a predictor of overall result.

I think there are generally four things that predict success in a turn around. 1. Previous year results 2. Last recruiting class 3. strength of schedule. We are losers in those three categories. The 4 category we were the biggest loser . We returned a horrible offensive line , with no established quarterback or running back. We returned the worst defense in the schools 100+ year history.

Considering all of the factors against us , a +1 in season 1 with two SEC wins is remarkable. Will JP be another Saban or Myer ?? You can't rule it out by the results but you can't count on it either. You will just have to wait and see

Mullens had a half decent QB who could read a defence or didn't have to do it all. He had Franks throw numerous quick throws and let his WR or skilled position players make plays. There were numerous games where JG could have thrown quick throws (5 step drops) to our massive WR, but instead we tried to throw bombs. This resulted in JG picking himself up off the turf numerous times. Mullens OL was half decent, but still didn't need to have to do too much. Florida also put points on the board (we didn't) which meant the DL didn't have pressure to make stops, but they did. CJP had fire, but our OL lost Trey, and a few others, while Richmond was good for 2-3 false starts every game which put the Offense on the back foot. Outside of the Auburn and Kentucky games, they didn't do a lot. Charlotte made that OL look like boys. They didn't have any pride in their performance. At one point CJP mentioned that if they didn't show something, they would be replaced.

Strength and conditioning takes about 6-9 months especially with 18-22 year olds. Once they had a S&C coach, they should have been able to get stronger and conditioned within 3 months, but physically they would have been overmatched for a little while, but still that doesn't explain getting manhandled throughout the season. Poor technique would though.

Just a question about Florida from last year to now. Didn’t they have a number of guys suspended for the season last year. Something like 9 or 11? Were any of those contributors this year that would have also helped them last year? I thought I had heard that. If so that would certainly help a firstbyear coach better the previous seasons results I would think.

We’d be playing for a NT if Phil would have just paid Dan 6-10 million a year .....except that Dandy Dan took a look at this job and said no thanks because he say what he was up against.

Tennessee did talk to Mulin but he looked at 2 things and said NO THANKS!

He looked at our player roster and he looked at how much harder it is to recruit for Tennessee.

He then looked at the player roster at Fl and how much easier it is to recruit right in their front yard and said yes, thanks to the Gators.

Both our O line and D line are far too small for SEC games and most other top teams.

Pruitt said it during our Spring practices...We have such a small team!

If you can't Win on the line of scrimmage then you can NOT get the Wins during the games!!!

Pruitt and staff tried to get more Linemen from the JUCO ranks and transfers and their main focus in recruiting right now is O and D linemen.

Some of you people simply need to WAKE UP and accept the reality that our player roster simply does NOT have many good SEC type players.

We're also making a total change on both our O and D schemes so our current player roster does NOT have the types of players for a 3-4 D or for a more smashmouth, ground pounding O.

Some says 2 or 3 years of recruiting but I'm sad to say that I think it's more likely a 4 to 5 year recruiting battle to get us back to even thinking a SEC East Championship level considering we need great starters and great backups for solid depth.

I just pray that God will let me live long enough to see my beloved Vols back on Top.

With all respect, coaches have the responsibility to turn the whole squad into players like Banks. If Vanderbilt can do it, why can't this staff do it?

We did not really change over the course of the season! After the first two or three games, I posted that there was no way we could beat Kentucky, Missouri, or Vanderbilt. I still think the Ky win was a miracle! We need a transformation similar to what we see happening in the Chicago Bears and frankly, it ain't happening yet.

And I say it's coaching!

Sad to hear and assessments of each and every player have to be made so we can start getting where we need to be as a program.

It's not a numbers or production issue. It's a question of whether the players want to be here or not and the effort they put forth. You can't put that 100% on coaching. Quit looking for answers in the numbers. It's purely subjective whether guys buy into a new coaching staff.

Take Charleston southern and Mississippi State off their schedule and replace it with Bama and West Virginia and they may only be a 7 win team. It is impossible to compare the 2 coaches and seasons because we do not play all the same opponents. We beat teams they lost to, they beat us, they got a weak FSU game this year which is normally tough for them.

Fact is our players do not have much fight in them and are fine with looking in the mirror and saying "I was good enough to get a D-1 scholarship" winning is not that important to them. Yeah they want to win but it is not the most important thing. Until that changes in the locker room we will have these kinds of thread at the end of november, no matter who the coach is.

Fulmer and company took the cheap* route and crossed their fingers. A couple of beat downs at the end of the season by powerhouses Missouri and Vanderbilt clues one in on how well the crap worked out.

* I put the asterisk in because I don't think money was the only motivation Fulmer had for hiring a guy like CJP. ADPF didn't want a guy that would tell him to get the hell off the field and back to his AD office, so he didn't hire one. At least that's my opinion.

In a nut shell - we do not have quality SEC players, specifically on the lines of scrimmage, then factor in that players didn't have the "I want it" mentality and you have the perfect recipe for disaster. I firmly believe that several of the players flat out quit in the Mizzou and Vandy games and didn't give a rat's azz about the Charlotte game, especially on the OL. It's a miracle that JG didn't sustain a major injury during the season, he was beat to crap!

CJP said it best in his post game press conference, paraphrasing - " . . . if you don't have competition you have a choice, play what you have or play no one". That pretty much sums up the 2018 team.

Recruiting, S&C program and solid coaching will improve the program, it's just not going to happen overnight!!
