Years and years ago, Tennessee fans were blessed to have Tom Siler as Sports Editor of the Knoxville News Sentinel. On his retirement, we were again blessed with Marvin West for Sports Editor before he became the Managing Editor of the News Sentinel. Then we hit the rocks on horrible sports editors. There was Al Browning, a Tuscaloosa, Alabama native....guess who he touted in his columns? After tolerating him for several years our hopes were for someone of the caliber of Siler or West....wrong! John Adams was the replacement and Vol fans have had to tolerate this jerk since. Adams is in reality not a supporter of UT athletics period. He even at length in an article years ago attacked the personal character, integrity and leadership of then UT Coach Phillip Fulmer. There are reports that Adams rarely attends any of the UT sporting evens, yet writes at length about them. When the News Sentinel had to cut loose one sports person some time ago thay should of kept Dan Fleser and fired Adams.

Newspapers are going the way of the dodo. There just isn't money in reporting day old news with the advent of 24 hour cable news programming and a veritable cornucopia of online/mobile options. The purchase and consolidation of floundering local and regional papers by Gannet Co. have further distanced papers' ability to connect with their readers. Most of the best sports writers have already migrated to alternate forms of media (I've heard wonderful things about the sports writing in 'The Atlantic' 'The Athletic'), and the few good ones left will eventually do the same as the news paper business continues to die.

At this point, there is no use in complaining about the KNS sports writing/writers as the KNS is already the walking dead. The best bet to get better local coverage (or sports or general, local news) that is actually in touch with local readers is an online operation. If and when someone - or a group of people - begin to fill that void and offer legitimate local coverage that is more than reporting Tweets and Volnation/reddit threads, drop the KNS and support them instead.

You hit on the key word, "Gannett." IMO the second your local news publications were purchased by Gannett, they became propaganda dispensing rags. They're much more comfortable publishing press releases than doing actual journalism as that requires reporters and reporters are headcount and have costs. Gannett kills actual journalism wherever they have a footprint as it's more important to put any sort of trash to print to meet a deadline than it is doing in depth reporting and getting the facts correct. Need I bring up Wadhwani and the hatchet job she tried to put forward as reporting but was a bunch of BS shenanigans? The good news, Gannett as a corporation is doomed and the sooner it croaks the better American journalism will be IMO.

Used to deliver the afternoon KNS & Sunday editions in the 60's. Was in shape using my bicycle. Whew! Great reading those wonderful articles about the teams Dickey & Mears put together. Tom Siler, the Marvin West (as he continues to this day). It has steadily declined to where no one reads that rag. I can't even find it in the barbershops. John Adams is obviously out to create controvery to sell papers, to whom I don't know anymore. Most people I know can't wait for Marvin's articles. If you notice here, all the articles are not from KNS!

The criticism of the KNS in general is spot on but I'll just point out that John Adams is not the sports editor and never has been. He's just a columnist and his job is to stir up emotions...which he seems to do quite well. I've always been a defender of John, but I'll admit that for the last few years his columns seem stale and he seems to be really reaching for subject matter. It's past time for the KNS to replace him.

But, yes, Gannett has destroyed "local news" in Knoxville. It's unfortunate. The KNS (and The Tennessean, which is also Gannett-owned) used to be really good papers.

Was that when Vicky went off on him in the press box?

Amen. I stopped getting the KNS a number of years ago because of Adams.

Unfortunately the death of local newspaper is also the demise of reporting on local issues in general. As much as we complain about them the local newspaper they Used to dig up the crap the politicians were pulling over our eyes. Now who is watching out for this crap? Tv news? That’s a joke, 10 minutes of weather, 5 min. Of sports, and 2 minutes of local shooting news. The rest commercials. Sad

It's still invigorating to walk into the laundry room and see my Bichon has gone warheads to foreheads on Fulmer's fat mug. Keep that paper coming!

By the time you read something in the newspaper it is a day old and already fotgotten.

I get info faster on here than anywhere. So many people are following different online platforms regarding UT/ NCAA/ General News, etc. and are happy & willing to share with the rest of us.

I think Adams can be entertaining but sometimes he tries waaaaay too hard and missed the mark.

This "local thread" is not of much interest to me, other than to hear thoughts from "afar". (have loved studying my fellow Tennesseans from all three grand divisions over the years).
That being said, did the Knoxville paper start losing it's "local appeal" when it sold out to the big news company? That seemed to be the case over here on the western side of our state? The Jackson Sun was a good paper 20 years ago, now it has gotten psychically smaller it's not even good for wrapping garbage up. The Commercial Appeal, well it has always had trouble trying to be all things to three different states. Now I don't know who it represents. Gave up on it a long time ago,

Adams is not a journalist, he's a satirist. The KNS management as stated above has no interest in sports (how much coverage do local HS sports receive today,) only in promoting a political position. They (as well an many other news outlets) had plenty of opportunity to take their assets (the reporters and journalist) and migrate them to the emerging forms of media. Instead they thought their assets were the printing presses and they let the real assets walk..... or pushed them out the door.

Think you mean "The Athletic". I haven't gotten a subscription, but I have seen some of Ubben's stuff and it is pretty good.

I subscribed to The Athletic because, as a life long Atlanta Braves fan I watched the best sports guys at the AJC (O'Brien and Schultz) leave the paper and migrate to The Athletic. I recommend it. You won't get up to the minute scores and such, it's about solid, in depth analysis that destroys anything I've seen on ESPN.
