The average diameter of the COVID-19 virus particles is around 120 nm (.12 μm).
"All of the cloth masks and materials had near zero efficiency at 0.3 µm, a particle size that easily penetrates into the lungs"
COMMENTARY: Masks-for-all for COVID-19 not based on sound data
In other words, the gaps in cloth masks are almost 3 times bigger than the average virus particle. And these gaps are the same size in both directions, in and out.
It's only a matter of person freedom when it only affects you. When some mouth breathing yokel risks my health and the friends and family I come in contact with, then it's no longer person freedom.
It's not that hard to wear a mask. Don't be that douche.
If you're talking about pure virus particles in a lab, sure. But what that article leaves out is that the COVID particles themselves (or any virus particles, for that matter) don't leave the body and travel through the air themselves, they are always bound to spray particles that from the nose or mouth. Any that are large enough to carry past 3 feet are large enough to be stopped by a cloth mask.
Think about it like this. If you take a spray bottle and spray into space, the spray travels up to 6 feet and it takes several seconds for the cloud to dissipate. If you spray into a cloth, most of the spray ends up on the cloth, any that gets through travels less than a foot. So if that spray bottle is your nasty COVID-filled mouth, then even in the worst of cases, you've cut the personal cloud of pestilence that follows you around from a 6-foot cloud in any direction that takes time to dissipate to a 1-ft mini-cloud that dissipates almost immediately.
If you can't understand how one is better than the other, then you're just looking for an argument.
Well stated.People make dumb decisions all the time. A lady went to a family birthday party with a visibly sick aunt. Now the aunt is dead and she is in the ICU as both had comorbidities.
The lady also went into her work office and infected two other people that had to be there. The lady works for my wife. Her bad decisions have put other people at risk. That's why it's not enough to be a personal thing.
I cant go around drunk driving even though I accept the risk to me, it puts others in danger.
If you want a football season you should support anything that gets this under control in the next 6 weeks because we not on the right trajectory for that.
We have DUI laws mandated by Government. If people cannot get the message and flagrantly Are irresponsible then Government has to step in to protect the general public.Everyone should, ideally, wear a mask in public whenever not engaging in eating or drinking.
The government has absolutely no business mandating this action.
Yes, because this is America, and I should be able to be a selfish ******* who only cares about myself and not being inconvenienced. Too bad we cannot choose who dies from COVIDWhat about stop signs, speed limits, building codes, seat belts, air bags, ingredient labels on groceries, OSHA regulations to protect us at work, requirements for doctors & engineers to take training and prove they know what they're doing? Should we eliminate all of those things? Are those things left wing and authoritarian?

I don't know how many times it has to be said: masks don't protect the wearer. They protect those around the wearer. If I wear a mask and you don't, you're protected from me but I am not protected from you.
Think of it this way:
If you and I are standing next to each other and neither of us is wearing pants, and I start to pee, you're going to get my urine all over your bare legs.
If you are wearing pants but I'm not, your pants will keep off a little bit of my urine, but you're still going to get most of it on your legs.
But if I'm wearing pants, my urine is going to get soaked up by my pants, and you will stay nice and dry.
Or I'm reading research by virologists, respiratory specialists, etc.If you're talking about pure virus particles in a lab, sure.
