Watching the UT/USM replay tonight I notice that every UT lineman is wearing 2 knee braces. Flipping over to the WV/UM game I don't see a single WV lineman wearing a knee brace. Is it necessary for all our lineman to wear them? Is it a hindurance? Does it decrease mobility and quickness? I never wore one, just curious.

I would think it would have something to do with the type of offense that WV runs...braces might limit their ability to be mobile? just a guess...

Yea I figured in WV's offense mobility would be key for a lineman. But why isn't just as important for our lineman? Just seems unnecessary to me and I don't see any advantage to it.

So now we've moved beyond questioning coaches to questioning the science behind knee braces?

I personally think it would be to cut down on knee injuries. You know how many times those lineman have other players falling into/on there legs? ALOT!!!..But it is just a guess, I really think its a preventitive thing.

Stuff it GA. You know I am not "that" guy. Never worn them and our o-line has looked slow for a few years now. So I was asking.

In all seriousness, I had to wear one for a while my senior year. I didn't notice a huge difference, but my nickname was never Speedy Gonzales to begin with.

Thanks Vader. Glad you could make a real contribution. Maybe GA should take some notes.

You dont see an advantage to wearing knee braces? maybe to prevent knee injuries?

I went to the doctors office for a bad knee. He gave me a knee brace. On the way out of the office I tackled 5 people and striped 2 clip boards!:salute:

I know what you're saying, but at the same time you have to know that somewhere there has been a lot of research done and somebody determined that any loss of mobility was outweighed by the prevention of ACL/MCL injuries.

I think the problem with mobility on the o-line came mostly from Jimmy Ray Stephens' messed up notion that we needed to put a bunch of sumo wrestlers on the o-line and our guys just started getting too big.

P.S. - Sit on it Potsie.

Do you still think our O-lineman are too big? WV's are much smaller but of course they are running a different scheme and nobody has to battle D-lineman like SEC O-lineman have to battle.

Tough to compare the linemen in an option scheme to our linemen since, like you say, they are doing different things. I won't even pretend to know the optimum weight for our linemen, but I think it's pretty clear that JRS screwed up the o-line to the point that we are just now recovering.

I never liked wearing them. I have worn them on both knees but they made me feel slower. Maybe I should wear them as an excuse for my speed?

as a guy who does orthopedic bracing for a living, i can tell you that the reason UT's O lineman wear those DonJoy Defiance "ACL" braces is more a matter of philosophy on the sports medicine team's (head MD, head trainer, head coach) part than anything and they are a preventative measure. that particular company is used by a ton of SEC teams and the SEC i think even has a contract with them. DonJoy. find em at djortho.com I know that's what alabama and auburn use because i know the rep who fits them. I got my BS in athletic training from Troy and our head trainer wasn't a big brace guy at the time. i have fit a lot of these and i never hear lineman complain that they slow them down. helpful????

Next time my wife wants to get romantic, maybe I should wear one of these knee braces.

personally, i hate them on skill guys, but what do you do. some doc's insist the kid has them after an acl reconstruction, some don't. as the lineman thing goes, i think one could argue that they have cut down on the occurrance and severity of some knee injuries, but you'd have to talk to someone still practicing as a trainer to get a better picture. it seems to me, and i pay attention to that stuff, that we haven't seen as many on the o line.
