Kirby takes shot at Vols opening game?

Kirby is sending a message to the Georgia Alumni and boasters that he's not happy with Georgia opening with Appalachian State in 2017...a decision he was not involved with. His reference to Western Michigan State is probably because someone in the Athletic Department is wanting to schedule that game for 2018...or some such nonsense. He is publicly letting the boasters know what his preferences are moving forward so he can get their support.

AND...taking a shot. :)

I'd be willing to give you 9/1 odds that Kirby didn't even know UT was opening with Appy State when he made that comment. All the examples Kirby used with the exception of a directional Mich school were previous or future opening day opponents he has or will face and fit the context to which he was speaking.

There is also another issue he is confronting and that is because our Auburn home and home got screwed up our 2017 home schedule is very unattractive. I think UT/UGA should be more of a premier rivalry than it has been in the past so if this ruffles some UT feathers and adds some spice to the rivalry, that's ok imo but I think at this point, Kirby isn't focused on UT's opening opponent.

Ok. :boredom:

What Kirby is saying here is that in his experience, players work harder and are more attentive to film study during the summer, when they know their first game is against a top team. He was not involved in creating the schedule for 2016 or 2017. Not sure about 2018...but he has said he prefers to open the season against a strong opponent to provide extra incentive for the players to work hard during summer work outs.

Look, he could have easily said something like this:

"Guys, I'm a first year HC, at a prominant SEC school which just fired its 10-win avg HC, and we have a 11-3 NC team coming in to GA dome on Sept 3, who's gonna give me as a new HC everything I can be ready for and then more / hey, they just took Clemson to a 45-37 game a few months ago. This is all I can handle this year / thank goodness Richt didn't schedule USCw like Saban did. I'm not Saban yet, so NC is a good match-up for me and this team, in the first week of this 2016. I have more things to focus on right now, than trying to placate to you donors about scheduling power teams week 1 in seasons 2018 and beyond. Look, Coach Saban avg'd only 6.5 wins his first 4 seasons as HC -- and you all, right now at this very moment, are salivating about wining 10+ this year, so just let me get back to work on this season, please, because believe you me, we have every challenge we can possibly handle, with NC !"

lol, he's sending a message to the boosters?

If he had that much concern over the OOC scheduling, shouldn't he be talking with someone in the AD?

Or he could just go right out and tell the boosters "I'm looking to change the culture here and want our program playing some top teams from other conferences...kind of like Tennessee has been doing."
