I was wondering if any folks here have thought about the irony of the two OC's from USC meeting on opening day in Knoxville. I wonder how much it will help/hurt either team that these guys know so much of one another and on the flip side with Monte having spent time with Chow in coaching conferences. Who here thinks this helps/hurts us on opening day? I know one thing, UT is gonna be amped to play this game after last years debacle and you may see a few powder blue heads rollin'.

I doubt that the coaches being so familiar with each other will really play too much into the game plan. Both sides as going to try and impose THIER will on the other team. But it will make for some interesting media spin/coverage.

I think UCLA will play a great teaser leading into the UF game and get better media/tv coverage than the two teams may deserve coming out of next year. Neuheisel vs Kiffin, Chow vs M Kiffin... those are great story lines for a game that might not even be televised otherwise.

i was actually thinking about this last week. the kiffin vs. chow thing is quite riveting because they pretty much hate each other

I think that it being the first big game for Kiffin (previous week vs W.KY does not really count) anything and everything will be analyzed much bigger than necessary.

sorry...i forgot about western kentucky...i actually had a schedule here on my desk. i can overlook them as long as the team doesn't...
haha, touche!

I think actually having WK as the opener helps us here. We should get the butterflys out during that game, hopefully build some momentum, and Neyland will still be rocking (a la Cal 06) since we won't have lost to UF yet.... i.e. the 'new coach smell' will still be very pungent. :p

I wonder who Fulmer will be pulling for? Will he pull for the new coach to fail or does he love the Vols enough to pull for Tennessee?

This will be Monte against Chow. Can't wait, Chavis got punked by Chow last year IMO!

Totally...given the O's and QB's struggles and the issues that UCLA had all over the field, this is one that the defense should have been expected to win for us and Chavis and crew blew it. UCLA adjusted and got into a rythm and we did nothing about it. That game more than any other one that I actually watched made me sick.

The other part of that game that continued to haunt the offense througout the year was just the absolute lack of discipline and concentration - false starts, missed assignments, botched exchanges. That points back to practice methods and demand for accountability. Those are the things that finally did Fulmer in.

We have more talent than UCLA so we "should" win.

You're exactly right! Thats why I'm so glad Chavis is gone. Say what you will about him, but I never cared for him when we had a lead. Last year we pick off Kevin Craft four times in the first half, then Chavis goes to his prevent with our cb's 10 yards off the ball, making Kevin Craft suddenly look like Joe Montana. Not with Monte though, it's payback time bitches!

As long as an O-coordinator could get his team to 3rd down without a turnover, chances were that as long as you sent in anything resembling a football play, you punked Chavis.

We had UCLA whipped last year before "coach-block" kicked in. Y'know that Phil will be rooting against CLK & the Vols. The fact that John Majors has visited UT practices & raves about 'em cements that. I'm quite excited about the new look, approach, etc.
GO VOLS!

Didn't Coach Chow say that S.E.C schemes are predictable or simple last year after the game? It was something like that, I doubt he will be saying that again this year.

no way. phil may be bitter, but the man LOVES the vols. i don't see him ever pulling for another team.

Says the man who lost 59-0 a week later to BYU and racked up a huge 239 total yards (9 on the ground) in that game. They hit us in a nervous first game state in a year that we weren't any good, and played a QB that knew no matter how good or bad he did he was not going to change the fate of his collegiate career.

I would anticipate a very different 2009.

Oh my.... Seems like I heard that argument last year! After last year, I have decided talent does not necessarily prove competence. Remember we were supposed to have one of the most talented offensively lines in the nation... Talent and Competence are oft gang aft agley.
