Kiffin about to be on the Sports Animal....

They talked about how he liked Tennessee and if it was what he expected. Talked about if he was expecting all the media attention when he took the job. Kiffin said he was. Talked a little about the twitter insident. Then they talked about if his coaching style would be like CPC at USC. Kiffin said that there practices would be even more intense than USC's.
Doug help me out here what else did he say.

I've always thought that USC had probably the toughest, most intense practice routine around.

Out of curiosity, do you know what the NCAA rules would be if, say, Eugene Marve called his old buddy and former coach Monte Kiffin, and asked him how he thought Robert would be used in UT's offensive system?

I think that is what they call a loophole :)

It would be a violation. Transfer rules prohibit contact with the coaching staff of any team that the transfer athlete has been forbidden from transferring to other than one initial call expressing interest from both parties.

What document are you getting this information from?

Not necessarily saying it's inaccurate, just curious. It seems strange that the NCAA can forbid "contact" between two long-time friends and former colleagues, such as Monte and Eugene.

It can when that friend happens to be coaching at an institution that the man's son has not been released to.

pg 8 of that document:

Talk to the school you’re interested
in attending so that you’re sure you
understand all that you have to do to
be accepted both academically and
athletically. Talk to the staff in the
admissions office. Ask for the athletics
department or athletic compliance office,
as well. But before you call, understand
that you will probably need to get
written permission from your current
school before you have a conversation
with the new school. See Know when you
need to get permission to talk to another
school on Page 11.

pg 11:

Generally, if you’re now going full-time to an
NCAA or NAIA four-year school and you want
to transfer to a different NCAA school to play,
your current school’s athletics director must
give written permission to the new coach or
member of the athletics staff before you or your
parents can talk with one of them.
That’s called
having a permission-to-contact letter.
You may write to any NCAA college saying that
you’re interested in transferring, but the new
coach must not discuss transfer opportunities
with you unless he or she has received written
permission from your current school.

If your current school does not give you
permission, another school cannot contact
you and encourage
you to transfer. This does
not preclude you from transferring; however, if
the new school is in Division I or II, you cannot
receive an athletics scholarship until you have
attended the new school for one year.

The paragraph you cited speaks directly to the athlete, and the contact that the athlete can make. It says nothing about his father potentially calling up his old buddy to see how the weather is in Knoxville.

Read the part I added. The rule applies to any member of the athletic staff and applies to the parents as well. It would absolutely be a violation and given Marve's expressed concern regarding the issue, I would say that's not something that has taken place.

I'll be shocked if he is.

Remember, these coaches have had no opportunity to recruit him to Tennessee. He is not allowed any contact with the coaches. That will likely factor huge in his decision.
I agree. Purdue has had all this time to reign him in. Contact with coaches will be a big factor in itself, not to mention the promise of a scholarship compared to merely just walking on. Granted UT has a more promising future than purdue, but I guess it will just come down to when can he play?

I wonder how they (the NCAA) would know if he already had contacted him... :)
