there's a fast lane on 81?!?!

Good point. The answer is no.

I did get stopped on 81 by a VA state trooper once. Was doing somewhere close to 100. I just looked up and he was in my rear view right behind me.

Fortunately he was amused when the first thing I said to him was “Where did you come from??’ And only wrote me a ticket for 80.

Mr google says it is less than 11 hours but I drive the speed limit. Friday, hoping to get somewhere south of Salem/Roanoke as close to Bristol as my eyes will allow.
Heaven, I've made the drive a few times in the past few years from Philly, but not since the flood. Flown into Nashville or Atlanta and driven over/up the last few trips down.

Will you update us (me!) on how the drive was? Used to take us just a bit over 10 hours from the west side of Philly, with maybe 2-3 gas and pee stops, but timing the Baltimore to DC traffic was the biggest lesson I learned. And I used to live in DC so I should've known better. The drive really usually isn't too bad going home, but I've driven down on Friday and hit that DC/Baltimore metro stretch too early and it was a disaster fighting with all the Fri morning commuter rush hour traffic. 11 hours sounds about right to me since you'll be coming from a bit farther east than me. Good luck!

Sure will. I am taking Thursday off to rest up so I can get an early start. Last time I drove far was New Jersey to Birmingham about twelve years ago and I spread that over two days. I have a Maverick hybrid that gets fantastic gas mileage so won’t stop for gas much. Can not even remember the last time I pumped my own gas lol. That will be an adventure in its own right. For those that don’t know , it is illegal to pump gas in New Jersey. I thought about taking the Pennsylvania Turnpike west to Harrisburg and then head south, but I don’t want to give those thieves that run the Pennsylvania Turnpike any of my major organs to use their insanely overpriced highway. Really looking forward to this. Have watched a ton of videos pre game stuff—looks like you all really put on a show.

Yep, drove from DC area last week and I-81 was horrendous. Didn't seem as bad last year, but after that decided to fly for the Sooners game.
The worst part for me when driving to DC from West Tennessee isn't the first 11 hours. Its the last 60-75 minutes on I-66. You're so close to being done with the drive but I swear time slows down on 66 exit off 81. Kills me everytime.
