Former University of Tennessee linebacker Kevin Simon is returning to UT to work on the strength and conditioning staff.

Roderick Moore left UT for the head strength and conditioning coach opening at Florida International.

Simon will join the staff on Wednesday as a graduate assistant, according to UT strength and conditioning coach Johnny Long.

Simon’s attempt to play in the NFL was hampered by injuries.

I wish him luck. I once thought he was going to be UT's next NFL star LB. It's too bad he had so many knee problems.

I remember when he was recruited as the USA Today defensive player of the year. He looked like a real star in the making. It just seemed like everytime he started to make an impact he got injured. It's a real shame too because I firmly believe that injuries ruined what could have been a special career. But I'm not surprised he kept having knee issues. I'm not a doctor and I know what I'm going to say will sound like junk science...but if you ever saw him on campus you would know what I'm talking about as far as how he was built. He was listed at 5'10" 230..if that's accurate then 227 1/2lbs of it was from his knees up. He had the smallest calves and ankles I've ever seen on a guy that size. To me it's just the laws of physics taking over. When you're that disproportioned it only makes sense that the knee ligaments are taking to much strain.

Sounds like Michael Munoz. His legs always looked underdeveloped.

Apparently Simon isn't the only incoming coach. A void on the S and C front may be filled with former UT lineman Harry Gilbreath. It isn't official yet, but it is in the works. Dang, 4 new coaches(Mayo, Inky, Simon, and Gilbreath).

Glad to hear Simon is back. I wish his NFL career could have worked out for him, though. He could have been great without the injuries.

surprisingly few good players turn into good coaches

Yeah, but in Simon's case, if he isn't a good coach, then he'll still be an asset since just looking at his chicken legs and frankenstein looking knees & thinking about what injuries cost him will have the kids strengthening and conditioning like a sonovabeech

I thought the same thing. When healthy, Simon was a beast. I had no doubt in my mind that if it wouldn't have been for all the knee problems, he would have been remembered up there with the best.
