Kelly has made the comment they have been able to impose their will on teams...
I'm honestly not sure what he could mean by that. They were statistically dominated by Auburn and FSU. I guess he could be talking about MSU. They're a true "system" team. A lot of their starters could not start for any other decent SEC team. They do some really, really simple/specific things within that system that makes them successful. They're always going to have a vulnerability to really talented D's. Their rushing O hasn't really been "imposing" vs FSU and Auburn. They avg'd under 4 ypc vs Auburn. Again, MSU was the exception.
They're 13th in the SEC in sacks allowed... I wouldn't call that dominant.
Defensively they're 4th against the run just behind UT so I wouldn't say they've been more imposing than UT in that regard. They're 3rd in total D so that's pretty good but when you look only at the 3 "big" teams they've played their average allowed increases from 293 ypg to 373.
I guess you have to take their athletes serious. But claims about someone "out physicalling" UT are a little hollow to me right now. That was the narrative before the Pitt game and UT whipped them man for man. It was a narrative in the UF game... and it wasn't the case on either side of the LOS.
UT's problem in my opinion boils down to playing too tentative in their zone. They need to take more risks and attack even if they make mistakes. Too often guys are standing all around receivers when they make a catch. They have to stop worrying so much about making an "assignment error" in those situations and step into that passing lane.
And also downplaying our tempo and how it "limits" what you can do playing tempo... He is challenging us physically and also our philosophy.... Don't see how that's not bulletin board material to players and coaching staff... #faafo
UT is a physical team on the LOS. I actually hope he's questioning that.
Everyone seems to dismiss UT's tempo... until their DL's barely get in their stance before the ball is snapped and the confusion starts setting in. A lot of people think tempo is about fatigue. The greatest benefit is creating chaos and communication issues for the opposing D. It may "limit" you but it still gives you enough to take advantage of a D that doesn't even figure out where to line up before the ball is snapped.
Also, heard his comment about motion. UT in spite of tempo uses motion fairly often. I hope he believes some of the stuff he said.
