Initials thoughts upon viewing:
  • Stands tall in the pocket (literally and figuratively) and shows good poise under pressure
  • Solid arm strength, can make most throws
  • Good accuracy in the short to intermediate routes and good touch on long passes
  • Has decent running ability for a statue-esque QB
  • Most of his receivers didn't seem to be the most gifted talent-wise yet he still found a way
Conclusion: He's been there, done that. I'd be pretty surprised if he wasn't the starter at least for the first half of the season. We're lucky to have him.

I don't know how to feel really between him and Guarantano. Guarantano apparently is performing a bit better. I guess maybe they'll both get a lot of playing time, not really sure who's going to be the starter. Chryst has experience and I think that's what's going to get him some game time. But if Guarantano keeps performing better, then he kinda just came here for his last year to sit around. He lost his starting position at Stanford for a reason. And looking at his stats he averages about 55% completion rate and that percentage per year has slowly dropped with each year. I think he'll get his passes picked off quite often. His interception rate also went up year to year. Starting at 0, then 2, then 4. Doesn't seem like someone who is improving. But I do wish him the best...he is playing for our team after all. I hope he ends up having a good season.

Honestly, I'll be surprised if he is the starter. Nothing against him, if he's the best, so be it.

The best case scenario would for a repeat of last year. Q.B. (A) plays the first few games, then the better q.b. (B) takes q.b. (A's) place and finishes the season.
We have good receivers this season. I would guess that Jennings & Calloway will enter the draft at the end of this season. We need a good q.b. on deck now to get them the ball, while they are still here. Next season, the scenario may be that our q.b. is established, whomever that may be, and our receivers are young and inexperienced.
A good o.l. and a good q.b. could get us 350 yards passing per game and 150 yards rushing per game this season.

Good point. However; the same could be said for Peterman at Pitt. "He lost his job at U.T. for a reason" "Maybe he came to Pitt to sit around"
Peterman ended up starting and being drafted in the NFL. Doudt Peterman could have done that at U.T. with bUTch.
I expect to see Dormady do well at Houston this season. May not get an NFL opportunity but I expect to see him do well enough for us to realize that he had talent but needed better coaching.

I hope one of them takes the reigns, but from all reports so far, like you said, JG seems to be performing better. My only doubt is that he doesn’t have it between the ears once the lights come on. I want to be wrong, but I’m guessing he is pulled by second half Florida for Chryst. Possibly very early if he doesn’t show up for WV and our defense creates a winnable game..

Lol at #4 in the nation in play action passing. Who is not going to bite on the play action when you have the runner up for the Heisman in the backfield. Also saw teams crashed hard on Love on several of those QB keepers. A lot of his success was predicated on them having a very strong running game and the opponents being committed to stopping Bryce Love. This coupled with an O-Line that could actually pass block and playing against terrible pass defenses really set him up for success.

And......... he still got benched for the Freshman behind him. Think about that.

Your last sentence is why I have reservations

Yeah, I also have the same concerns for JG. It's a different animal once it comes time for an actual game. And JG, to me, seemed like he had a lot of anxiety when the pressure turns up. Which is where Chryst could definitely come in and make a difference. Being that he's considered more of a vet and has more experience. Tough call.

Well actually he wasn't "benched" for anybody he had a rough game vs San Diego St. and got hurt the next week vs UCLA which led to Costello to come in to finish that game and to start the next week. That was Costellos first start. I do remember Chryst having a knee injury in a bowl game too I think.

just don't see him being the starter out of the gate...he's just not ready yet...and,

GO VOLS!

However he probably wasn't going to beat Costello out as the starter imo, which is why he transferred. I think Chryst is a good game manager and has the experience but I like JG as well so it really doesn't matter to me who starts, may the best man for the job win.

Granted Peterman sat behind an average QB for a year before he was able to earn a starting spot at Pitt.

Really makes a lot of difference when you have a decent line to block and receivers that can get spacing. We did not have that last year.

Unless JG has improved significantly, Chryst will be starting, imo.
