Not everyone can be John Ward. But I feel you brother. It feels like Tennessee Football has been missing since John Ward. That's the truth for meBob just doesn't paint pictures with his words. It's not his style, it's not his skill. It never will be. He's always been a TV guy, and well, it is what it is. That style doesn't need to tell you a story because you see it on the TV already. So they call the plays and there you go. I sort of feel like he used to have more pep about it, but eh, maybe I'm also thinking a bit about Tim Priest there. Though to be fair, it's not been the most exciting decade of Tennessee football to call, for that matter.
McGrath's field goal kick to stretch the lead to seven is a perfect example of this. 51 yards is not an easy kick at the college level, and Bob just says "McGrath kicks it and that ball is going to go right through the middle of the uprights." That kick gave Tennessee a touchdown lead with 8 minutes to go in the fourth quarter, in what was a very back and forth game, but you'd never know it from his call. Whereas a guy like Ward (I know, not fair, but) would have said "McGrath's kick is in the air, McGrath's kick is headed for the end zone, McGrath's kick is ... GOOD! From 51 yards, McGrath sends the ball straight down the middle of the uprights, giving the Volunteers a seven point lead and breathing room as we cross the 9 minute mark in this fourth quarter." Ward painted pictures; he told the story. What's the mood, who's got momentum, who's surging, who's struggling, etc. The best radio guys don't just call games, they tell you the story of the game.
Also, I agree, the sound mixing in that video is rough. It's hard to hear anything over the music.
I'm not expecting ward. Kessling is nearly unbearble to listen too. Well, for m,e anyway. Pat has made it even worse. Nothing personal against them but they suck
Pat was better with the Titans, but I think we’re seeing why the Titans went a different direction. Pat seems to be phoning it in. Bob just isn’t a very “raw raw” guy.I like Kessling. I'm not a fan at all of Pat Ryan as the color analyst. Last week's fill in for Ball state was good, but not Pat. The color guy should be the one that brings the energy and fandom level of excitement and balance out Bob. Either way I think this video drowns out the game noise with the background music and makes the radio call sound less dramatic.
