and if the NYT is telling the truth this time, he could end up ineligible.

In an interview in his office here this week, the general manager of Fenerbahce Ulker, Nedim Karakas, said the club had given banking and housing records to the N.C.A.A. that show Kanter received benefits that could jeopardize his amateur status for college basketball.

“I am sorry for telling this for Enes, but we cannot lie if someone asks the whole story, we cannot hide,” Karakas said.

Karakas said that Fenerbahce provided housing to Kanter and his family for more than three years, provided them with food and pocket money and paid Kanter a salary of more than $6,500 a month during his final season.

If Kanter is ineligible, Tenn and Uf will become the favorites to win the Sec.

I don't see how it's an if. If the team turned over evidence that they paid him, then it's a done deal.

Why would Kanter want to go to school when he's making good money in Europe? He'd be drafted next year anyway....

After seeing the Turks threaten Kilicli with conscription if he didn't play for their international team this summer, color me dubious about anything anyone there has to say when it lets them keep control of a prospect. Interesting that he wouldn't let Thamel see these "records."

Exactly.

On another note, Thamel has a huge hard on for Calipari.

The only thing is that Kanter's handler / agent / consultant / buddy basically confirmed the payments. His analogy to a prep school is hilarious. It's just like a Prep School, where you and your parents get to live off the school's dime and you don't have to go to any classes, and you are playing with other professionals.

If the NCAA does not rule him ineligible, it's open season on recruiting overseas professional players under the age of 20.

Thamel is like most writers with a New York address. He really, really likes that coach at Louisville.

As if written by a script, someone now comes forth claiming Thamel completely took their comments out of context and mis-represented them.
The implication of course with those quotes is that Ergul is a shady character and one that even Kanter’s former coach wont speak about. Late last night I spoke with Rodney Crawford and he says that Thamel completely misrepresented his comments and even used quotes not made about Kanter or Ergul in the story. “Max is a great guy and Enes is a great kid,” Crawford said. “Never in a million years would I say something negative about those guys. The thing I was saying was that I dont want to speak on Max or anyone else without talking to them first. There was nothing negative about it, I just was saying he was my friend and I didnt want to talk about him to the press.” Crawford added, “he then took it and made it look negative.”

In the end, I don't think there is any way in hell that Kanter plays. However, Thamel is going to continue to make a habit of throwing responsible journalism out the window in hopes of making a splash.

The guy got paid to play ball, he's not an amateur.

The fact that he was paid is not in question, its technically what he was paid for. The NCAA allows amateurs like that to be paid for food, travel, lodging, and any other cost associated with the team. They are not allowed to be paid for actually "playing". Its splitting hairs I know, but there is a difference.

All in all, I thinks the waters are way to murky to even touch recruits of this nature. The turkish league doesn't want any of them leaving to come here, so they may very well produce false documents or withhold the truth in certain cases.

I would love for Kanter to play, but I would rather keep the season in the books than give it up down the road after the NCAA clears him, then changes its mind next June after recieving some shady document they consider proof.

Or concrete evidence. :birgits_giggle:

I would just ask that if they clear him they don't come back later and change their mind. Don't fail to find issues yourself and then hand out punishment to someone else who didn't find them.

If it's in question then rule him ineligible and let's move on...

I really can't believe anyone is looking into any one recruited by Cal. His recruiting methods are above reproach.

If evidence later comes in that forces them to retroactively change their eligibility ruling, then they're going to do it. Schools that have a problem with that should avoid players (and coaches!) with questionable backgrounds.

I have to believe the entire staff at UW are laughing their collective asses off.

I have to respect cal's willingness to recruit the dangerous, fringe, lightning rod athletes if they can play.

Questionable academics, "That's my name on that test if I passed" kids, questionable amateur foreign kids. What's next ?

Space aliens ? Circus animals ? Cross dressers ? Science experiments ?
