As long as he gets into the booth three hours before the game starts, then they'll probably see improvements.

That offense was great because of Dobbs, not DeBord. Our best offensive play there for a couple of years was a Dobbs improvised scramble on 3rd and 8 after the play broke down. DeBord's playcalling was absolutely atrocious at times, particularly during the App St game, first half of the Florida game, and it totally laid an egg during the South Carolina game, which ruined that season. Kamara was entirely under-used, but that also could have been because of Butch.

You remove good players from any system and the system doesnt look so good. That's not unique to Debord.

DeBord/Butch got nowhere near as much out of that offense as he should have. The "highest scoring offense in UT" history label was obtained because they scored a combined 167 points against Tennessee Tech, Kentucky, and Mizzou in 2016. That offense was bad in multiple big spots during DeBord's 2 years, and much of the success they did have was because Dobbs's improvised scrambles keeping drives alive.

DeBord's offense looks great relative to the offenses that have followed, which have been absolutely disastrous. When he left, most people here were glad to see him go.

No, because Cutcliffe has been good other places without him.

Also, what made Dobbs so good was something that can't be coached (the improvised scrambling). The things that made Peyton good (his accuracy, reading defenses, etc.) are things that are coached.

Cause no other teams played bad teams or ran up the score.

You cant make these type of separations. He set records. Period.

Sure you can. He made his hay against bad defenses, under-used really talented players, and was bailed out by a QB great at improv. His offenses only look good relative to Larry Scott's and Pruitt's.

I am pretty sure record breaking looks good against anyone.

You can say the same about Sarkisian at bama. Bailed out by great athletes. It's hard to look bad with three Heisman candidates in the team. We didnt have any.
Or LSUs big run. Best qb play anyone ever seen.

How often do good coaches look great with players considered mediocre?

There are definitely instances where coaches look good with players who are considered mediocre. Wisconsin does it most years seemingly no matter who the HC is. Dan Mullen did it pretty consistently at Miss St. Mark Dantonio had a nice run for several years at Michigan St with a bunch of guys who weren't highly recruited. At Duke, Cut has done a good job squeezing everything he can out of his talent, and even had a guy nobody recruited out of HS (Daniel Jones) taken as a top 10 pick.

Great coaches get the most out of the talent they have, whether it be mediocre talent or elite talent. Their teams are, at an absolute minimum, the sum of their parts. DeBord's offenses, IMO, were less than the sum of their parts.
