Kamara, Reeves-Maybin join UT diversity protest

KNOXVILLE — University of Tennessee students gathered at the school's men's basketball game Saturday, holding signs in protest of a panel of state lawmakers' movement to take state funding away from the school's diversity office.

Among them were current Tennessee football stars Alvin Kamara and Jalen Reeves-Maybin.

I suppose the legislature is reacting to the no Christmas party letter that was issued.

Are Kamara and JRM anti-Christmas?

So kamara and reeves-maybin are in favor of gender-neutral pronoun stupidity and they're against "Christmas" parties on campus, is that it?

I mean... how does the office of diversity even directly affect either of those two players? Or how would defunding that office affect them?

I don't know... do they know?

Anybody here have an idea?

No
It really doesn't unless XE was already in their vocabulary
No
Nope, not really

Tn just should hope this doesn't show up in the major papers. Could be another dart used. The state legislation did this, go protest on their steps although XE is a lot money to be getting 5 million dollars for nothing.

Of course they do. And others are free to judge and ask questions and make comments about what they are protesting.

Well certainly, but what I have seen is essentially these guys should just shut up and feel lucky that they are scholly. These two have given more than they have taken from the football program and if they want to use their status for a cause then why should anyone hold that against them.

I have noticed a trend on here anytime the words diversity or race come up, there is an instant backlash. I am sure it is because all is good in America on those fronts.

Let's not spread misinformation here... That office didn't mandate that gender-neutral pronouns be used by students. It was simply a resource for students to be aware of (because languages evolve over time, ya know). The office also didn't speak out against Christmas parties. As with the pronouns, information was posted as a resource so departments across campus could be mindful of those employees and students who do not celebrate Christmas.

The diversity office affects all students at UT, regardless of race (because diversity encompasses more than race). Without scholarships for qualifying minority students who couldn't otherwise afford to attend, everyone loses in regard to a college experience with very little interaction with people from different backgrounds and perspectives. The defunding also has implications on faculty and staff recruitment, which affects students and student-athletes alike.

Probably more now than in past years, the lives of students and student-athletes aren't as separated anymore. More athletes are joining student organizations and engaging in more campus activities, which likely explains the gradual rise in athlete participation in student-led activism.

I have no issue with the players advocating that for which they believe, especially on a college campus. But iirc, there are two primary (I'm sure there are others) reasons why the state legislature has threatened or in fact cut funding from the diversity budget on UT's campus....the ze/zou or whatever ridiculous transgender pronoun BS and the directive to not have "Christmas parties" on campus. Based on those two stupid ideas, I'm all for eliminating the damn department altogether. But that's my personal opinion....the players are certainly free to advocate for their beliefs as well.

I believe all is good on most fronts. What a sorry place it would be if everything were perfectly diverse and equal. Sorry but when I go to Hooters I don't want some bearded fat guy waiting my table.

Well things escalated in here quickly. Not going to give the guys a hard time.
I have no clue about what that department has done other than the negatives that made headlines. It IS possible they have done some good also.

I know I don't want the UTAD characterized simply by their negative headlines in the news.
