Well....flame me if you want (I really dont care) but after watching our defense yesterday (which did in the end show up)...I seriously started questioning Wilcox's ability to coach defense in the SEC....the passes to Cobb over the middle were there every time and UK moved the ball most series with ease...as other teams have done this season...

Now we did get stops and the ball fell toward the Tennessee River which helped...but several games this season defense wise I really started wondering if he is capable of coaching defense in the fast paced SEC....

I almost think Chavis was a bit better and more suited to the SEC style of play...thoughts?

I actually thought UK would put up a lot of points. They are capable of running and passing. The two teams we shut down prior were 1 dimensional. I'm impressed he was able to hold them to 14 points.

It's Wilcox first year and the talent level is down. Will wait and see how the defense does when he gets the right players for his system and they have more time to learn the defense. I'm guessing his defense requires being fundamentally sound. You don't become a well oiled machine overnight.

I think it was a combination of the lack of superior talent on the defensive side of the ball, and Wilcox having to make an adjustment to the SEC. He was up and down, but I'm excited to see what he does next year.

I can't believe people hated on Chavis as much as they did...

The man was a coordinator for a hundred years and still made some coaching decisions you'd expect from a guy that learned the game of football that morning.

We held them to 14 points, how is that bad......Cobb is a game changer, its hard to defend a player like him

And Chavis was the king of allowing one player to consistently throttle his defense.

Wilcox is playing the 'hand he's been dealt'... As the talent level rises his defense will get much better..

John Chavis is so overrated....He made Matt Mauck look like an All American with the best defensive line in the Sec over the last decade.

Chavis did stink it up on many occasions, but he was also voted by other coaches as the assistant coach of the year...basically being recognized by his peers as being a bad a$$. The man put more than a few players in the NFL...

Wilcox has grown on me.. The bend but dont break is what we have.. I actually yesterday was basically confident in the d.. I would tell my wife watch they will make a first down here...then watch we will hold them... I think in a year or so he will be the best D coordinator in the SEC. Time will tell. I think he is a better college scheme than Monte had.

JW did pretty good considering our situation at DT don't you think? John Chavis's hair would of been white by season's end if he was faced with the same mess.

He won that award right after fielding one of UT's worst defenses ever.

We won the game, the defense got stops when they needed it. Sounds like he did pretty good to me yesterday. That being said, the changing play of the game was the fumble on the goal line that we recovered. They score there I'm not sure how and if we bounce back. That was a game changing turnover. He held them to 14 points yesterday, overall I would call that a good performance.

I still love Chief, but let's be honest...third and long was a given for most teams. He was torched more than once. I always had a terrible feeling when we had just about anybody backed up with 3rd and 15 or longer.

c what happens next year with his style of players in his defense and dont forget he had a makeshift d line with undersized dts and no depth who couldnt rush the passer very well it all starts up front

We had injury after injury on that team...and still voted by his peers as the best Assistant coach. Opinions by your peers means a lot more to a professional than a bunch of talking heads....just saying.

All that said, I am glad he is gone and that we have a new regime.

The 2nd half adjustments by Wilcox were exactly what we needed to do. He lined up Janzen right over the top of Cobb to pretty much take him away for the 2nd half. Once Cobb was consistently being covered we were pretty much able to control the game. They look to Cobb first on literally every passing play.
