Just call the support number and if it's under warranty they will send you a box, stick it in the box and ship it off. About a week and a half later you will get a refurbished console that is comparable to your previous(if Elite it will be Elite). Cross your fingers that you get a console with a better chipset.
Also, if your console didn't have HDMI the refurbished consoles they send out do so that's nice.
You can also print your own shipping label if you don't want to wait for a box.
Also, I got my original 360 back, so I got screwed on getting an upgraded model.

I wasnt aware that there were different chipsets???
There has been multiple motherboard revisions since the Xbox 360 released. As usual they are silent so as to prevent buyer's remorse and other problems like that.
They are done to build cheaper consoles and they also make the console use far less power and therefore generate less heat.
The Jasper chipset is the most recent revision.

They are indeed quieter, but I am already seeing some RROD unfortunatly. Maybe they will get it right with the valhalla chip that will start showing up sometime next year.my son's Jasper core 360 has been fantastic. it's quiet, cool and hasn't given us a bit of problem in nearly a year of daily use.
All 360's were were given an extra year warranty, but if it is still out of date they won't fix it.
