I hope you guys aren't very rude by me asking this or think I'm a troll, B/c I really like to talk SEC ( some vol ) football on here you guys have a very good site for such things! I know you guys are the Tennessee Volunteers, but may I ask what does smokey the dog have to do with anything Volunteer related...I am not trying to be rude guys at all I just got to thinking all the SEC teams and their Nicknames and the vols and auburn kinda puzzled me...I mean auburn is the rivers but they have an eagle, but this isn't about them...I was just wondering what does smokey have to do with Volunteers?

Thanks ahead of time for all the answers!

Anyway, Smokey the name for the Smokies and the Bluetick Coonhound due to being a breed native to the state as chosen by the students in the 50s.

okay then why the Volunteers? I mean what are they?

I know what a normal Volunteer is but in terms of your guys football team whats it mean? Thanks again

For a long time, there has been a blue tick coonhound on the sidelines. The "mascot" was a volunteer with a rifle ready to go fight the Mexicans at the Alamo or anywhere else. The politically correct crowd decided that was a violent image and promoted the blue tick coonhound to mascot level. By the way, what does a reptile have to do with Gators?

That is like asking why Florida's mascot is a Gator. I mean... do you guys have Gators there? If you still are confused you should just wiki the entire state of Tennessee. That's a good place to start. I'll give you a hint... it's immediately on the right-hand side under the state flag and state seal.

And really. The Tennessee Volunteers throws you for a loss but the "Tide" and "Roll Tide" and the damned elephant are all logical to you?

Tennessee is known as the "Volunteer State," a nickname earned during the War of 1812 because of the prominent role played by volunteer soldiers from Tennessee, especially during the Battle of New Orleans.

The state is well known for its citizens volunteering for military duty and other important actions in helping our country thoughout its history. A Volunteer quickly stands up for freedom and what is for the common good without being required to do so - even if that means giving their life in doing so. That is why a true Vol is orange blooded in good times and in bad.

Because there have been more citizens of the state of Tennessee to Volunteer to fight in wars than any other state in the U.S.

Why Bulldogs for UGA? Bulldogs are normally associated with the British.

I love how homers from other teams show their closet "love" for the Vols by continously trolling our site, even in the off-season. Why don't you just come out the closet and profess your love for UT football and our fan base? Change that blue to white, because it makes the color ORANGE look so good.
