Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't he just holding the phone up to his ear to hear if it was ringing? I thought I heard him explain that it was so loud, he couldn't tell if it was ringing or not, so he held it to his ear.

Yeah kids have no idea what to do with it as per the video below. A few years back here at my job one of the younger guys asked for a phone number, we threw a phone book to him and he asked what it was. Kids just don't know.
