I live somewhat close to Louisville now and I listen to ESPN 680 every morning on my commute to work. Marques Maybin (Jalen's father) is a co-host on the morning show and I really enjoy listening to him, he also has his own show from 10-noon. He is very humble and is a positive person, I see where JRM gets it from. If you any of you guys get a chance check it out, they mostly talk about U of L, but they do mention Tennessee every once in a while since JRM is Marques son.

Marques was a baller and a all around good dude. Best athlete I played against. Which included Trenton Hassell and Shawn Marion (both in Clarksville at the same time).

.

Completely false.

Does having good parenting increase the odds of a young one to grow up to being a quality person - absolutely.

Does it almost always happen - absolutely not! We all know of awesome families where one of the multiple children get off track in life while the others sail right along as expected.

We also all know of super people who were raised by some really sorry parents.

There are no guarantees with parenting.

The reverse is more likely in that those who do NOT have good parenting are most likely to Not to become a quality person.

I had no idea that was JRM's dad. 37 doesn't seem old enough. I just never made the connection.

Think I remember reading that he changed it to honor someone in the family. Maybe someone can elaborate.

While I would agree with the sentiment that we have a free will and might chose to reject the proper parenting, the fact is overwhelming that good, strong parenting will MOSTLY produce good, strong, morally correct respective adults. Just no way around that and the examples are EVERYWHERE....that is what is wrong with the crime we see all around and it will NEVER change until dad's take up their role in the home once again...just aint gonna happen no matter how much money government throws at it and good men volunteer their time to help fatherless children....DAD'S WHERE HAVE YOU GONE?!!!!

Your arguing the difference between "almost always" vs "increasing the odds" vs "MOSTLY".

I don't know the statistics of folks that were raised in a solid home who have siblings that turned out just fine yet they end up off track but its by no means some rare event. Whatever adjective you choose to describe the volume of times it occurs is certainly debatable.

It does seems like there are more that had every opportunity to make a good life for themselves that fail to do so vs someone who had everything stacked against them yet they overcame the obstacles including poor parenting to become productive adults.

Bottom line is JRM appears to be doing quite well for himself!

"Completely False!" I stand corrected, good parenting has absolutely NOTHING to do with how a kid turns out! My bad!

I said ALMOST cause I new some goober would have a conniption and was going to post exactly what you did!

Started out as a thread to highlight how JRM turned out so good and escalated into pistols at dawn. At ease gentlemen.

I've listened to Maybin some on 680; he is a cool dude and was a major baller at UofL. I've interacted with him a little on twitter; it's cool to mention Jalen to him and get a response...

However, I can't listen to UofL sports when I have Vols sports talk on my TuneIn app. :)

Haha, I just got done working out at Trenton's gym here in Clarksville and was sitting here reading this as I was halfway talking with him. I read him what you said...."man, that's messed up" -Treton Hassell

As a parent, it is plain to me that when they turn out well, it's because of good parenting, while if they screw up, it's despite good parenting.

:wink2:

OP, thanks for the info on JRM's dad. :hi:

All 3 of those guys could flat out ball. Hassell and Marion were a treat to watch in high school on the same team. Alley-oops for days.

Maybin was incredible, too. Didn't have the supporting cast.

I was on the bench and has a front row seat.

Glad JRM is a VFL

You aren't alone. I listened to that show for a few months and never put two and two together until one day they were talking about UT and how his son played on the team, and then my mind was blown lol. I blame it on Vern for making me think his last name is Raybin.
