JP Estrella to the Portal-(Commits to Michigan)

With four players hitting the portal (including three with starting experience), it won't be long before the "fire Rick Barnes" crowd takes notice. They are currently in the Lady Vols forum; Kim Caldwell has bought Rick some time. Too soon?
The “Fahr Barnes” crowd is quickly being replaced with the “who gives a shat about the new NIL college athletics” crowd. Can’t say that I’ll be watching all the games next season and I don’t recall the last time I didn’t see a game or at least listen to it.

Estrella not that consequential of a loss, but we don't have much size left on the roster either. I suppose this means we are expecting to cash in on one of the transfer portal big men? Maybe we can get Tiller, Fru, Cyril, Sylla or Bidunga seem like comparable guys. We in on any of them?

I was firmly in the "replace Barnes in 2 years" before it becomes another FatPhil situation. I've since come to my senses and decided we should allow Barnes to coach so long as he desires. Kinda wild to see more people calling for Kim's head and Rick's, but that's the insanity of volnation from one day to the next!

Another reason among the many for getting college athletic fixed, and in a hurry before it collapses on it's own weight, or lack of it. When universities start seeing their fan base dwindling as you can see it now , it will change. As a UT fan, I have no interest anymore to support NIL athletes, transfer portal, and seeing the product put on the field and court. As some of my friends who are most generous contributors to UT and UT athletics, they are beginning to see the same picture. Many, if not all are re-considering their financial support. Sad that college athletics has come to this point. Hope it is fixed before it goes down the tubes

It's funny how he says the decision wasn't easy.

But jumped into the portal before it officially opens tomorrow. Sure seems like the $ made it an easy decision
I don't believe these $hits as far as I could throw them.....And my gosh stop these, it was a though decision....I love this place...I love my teammates BS....and just get your ass out of here. And as far as I'm concerned....if a coach takes a kid back after they declare for the portal, then that coach is weak.

I can’t disagree enough with this statement. Estrella will be the most highly $NIL compensated player from this year’s roster. If there are multiple programs willing to pay him $3 million, then he won’t be easily replaced.

Ha, it does seem to be getting difficult to develop memories or attachments to all these short term visitors to our program. Losing three players that Vol fans genuinely liked because of NIL realities is frustrating. I understand you being offput by it.

Friend of mine that has VQ says there’s some buzz Indiana is offering Estrella $3-$4 million, which I find mind boggling if true.

Honestly, I wouldn’t offer him half that much, especially considering JP being injury prone and not a great scorer at the rim.
That would make sense.. isn't Rod Clark there in Indiana?

Don't like this at all. Fine if we have a big name coming in. If we put all our eggs in one basket,
it could come back to haunt us similar to last year when we failed to pick up a 2 guard we thought we had.

If they are giving him the $3M, they may regret it unless JP makes a startling recovery
from the various ailments that have been haunting him. Hope he makes AA. Best of luck.

Completely quit recruiting high school players. Just go out and buy a team every year. Parents and kids make it only about money, then fans can completely sell out too. No more scholarships. Players can pay their own way. This is what I figured would cause Barnes to retire. He's handled it better than I expected. Still think this will drive him into retirement sooner than age. The schools keep raising prices and demanding more money from fans. Makes me appreciate past players more. No more ZZ and Mashack and players that play for the fans as well.
Barnes loves it. He said it was easier than ever to recruit.

They will fix it when the ones making the most money out of it stop making as much money. Fanbases shrinking will be a part of that but it won't be THE thing. It will be when broadcast contracts and corporate sponsorships stop pumping the money in.

Also for now, most of the "I'm not going to watch anymore" is mostly posts on messageboards, which like social media is not real life.

I’d wager we have to pay $3 million or more for a comparable replacement. This “NIL gone wild” of college athletics is crazy. These universities are clearly unable to exhibit any form of self control and are falling into an arms race to buy the best team no matter the price

We will, but that player probably will have an ability that has evaded JPE a number of times. Availability.

You'd like to keep JPE for continuity, culture, and sunk cost, but paying $3 mil for his future is a bit wild given the risk. Seems our coaches know this and agree that it exceeds the value they have on him when weighed against the known risk.

Meh. Estrella would have attended Iowa, but they couldn't match our NIL package we gave him. I also seriously doubt Estrella is getting $3M or anywhere remotely close to that figure.

I would never bash one of our kids for testing the waters to see how much $$ they can make. It's called capitalism.

The days where someone goes to a school for the name on the front of the jersey and a free education are unfortunately gone - at least until something changes with the NIL and transfer portal. As a fan, I don't like it any more than anyone else, but if I were in their situation and could cash in, I'd do the same thing.

Dude couldn't throw a ball in the ocean during the tournament. Not losing sleep over him.
