Some ppl seem to have forgotten who JP Estrella is. From other fan bases, some our own fan base, and the cbb media/analysts/cbb content creators.
Without that injury no telling how big his name would be right now as a returning player. This picture was posted by Riley Collins who is on staff for Vol Hoops for player development.

He is in fact our most skilled big offensively & has the 6'11" size defensively to hold it down against bigger stronger opponents. A healthy JP gives us a champion Florida type of a deep frontcourt for the Vols. I strongly believe everyone will be reminded why JP Estrella shot up the recruit ranking charts in hs. '25-'26 reminder season otw

Hope you're right, but to date, he's potential and hope. Until he actually does it on the court, folks are going to be somewhat slow to board the hype train for the kid.
This. He was mentioned on this forum multiple times this season in the context of “what could have been had he been healthy “. I could see him potentially being one of the top impact players who didn’t play last year if he’s 100% and be the final puzzle piece that gets us to the final 4.

And that’s for his good, too. Not fair to him to raise expectations too much, especially coming off that injury.

This. Some people act he's the 2nd coming of Jokic.

Let's see something first

I don’t know about the final puzzle piece that gets us to the final 4 but I would love to see him at 100% and would venture to say that he could be a vital front court player for us. I think getting Gainey back could put us in that final 4 talk.

As they should

Hope he has strengthened his upper body and hands/arms because he and Cade Phillips do not have particularly good hand strength. Defenders usually win the battles inside.

I haven't forgotten. That was a huge loss this past season.

I'm keeping expectations low for Estrella, given the extended amount of time he's been out due to that foot injury.
I'd say his floor offensively is what Okpara gave us last season - 7 PPG, 6 RPG off of lobs or put-back dunks.

I’d say you’re selling him short as JP had some post offense as a freshman. He may not get more than 7 PPG, but I doubt it’s all lobs and put backs. JMO

I too, would like to know exactly what his injury was. Early on there was concern about a possible stress fracture. Anyone know? Hopefully not, if I recall Sam Bowie had that injury that plagued him for most of his shortened career.

Was reported as a broken bone in his foot that required surgery when it didn’t heal with rest and rehab IIRC.

The numbers you gave: if jp estrella is Averaging 7 points and 6 boards on the whole season while we get productivity from Carey, Phillips and Okpara - we will be in great shape. Those are not bad numbers at all coming off an injury and probably off the bench. I hope we do get 7 & 6 from him 🔥

I was very impressed with Estrella as a freshman & disappointed when he got injured early in this season. With the Strength/Conditioning program the sky's the limit for this fellow. Just my opinion.

Yep, folks tendencies are pretty ingrained, doubters like to doubt. It is easy to see when positive posts never get a pass, a real tip.

Estrella still to this day has one of the best high school film I’ve seen in a Tennessee commit. In high school he could do what he wanted. Now is that probably because of the talent in Maine? Probably, but cooper Flagg did just come out of Maine. So it’s not like there’s no talent there. Anyways I’ve always been high on Estrella. We really do have potential of this being the deepest front court we’ve ever had

As a senior in high school jp estrella played at a big time prep school called brewster, with all d1 players and played top competition. They were a great team, one of the best in the country... He's proven that he's worth the ranking he got outside of Maine
