Josh Smith explains why Tennessee fell apart in 2017

Maybe 3 to 4 players had want to, the rest garbage effort. No coach and no leadership on the field. Disgusting!

Feel bad for the way the seniors left. They came in and were able to win three consecutive bowl games and helped be part of righting the ship...but, unfortunately things came undone this past season.

Hopefully this past year will just be a blip on the radar as the program trends up. With time, hopefully the seniors will see that they helped lay the foundation for the future.

Sure, Josh with his drunken roommate fight is one to talk.

What does that have to do with the broken culture of the team? You’re surely not saying him getting into a personal off-the-field scrape with his non-football roommate contributed to 4-8 last year.

Simple really.
We had MAC level talent and coaches.

In past years when we landed a good player this site was full of BOOM comments
The talent is there
Trevor Daniel. Tuttle. McKenzie. Kelly Chandler Smith Galloway Kongbo Coleman Thomas Warrior Schmburger
Players either did not develope or did not buy in
Weren't we excited when Snoop left Penn State? Weren't we excited to finally get a Q B coach?
Why are they now considered garbage MAC level coaches?

It was interesting how the article mentioned Smith was on a "bulk-focused" workout program with UT as opposed to one that met his needs.

I interpreted this as basically saying that Smith, and every other player, had the same workout regimen as everyone else regardless of position, skillset, etc. I'm not a weightlifting guru but isn't this the exact opposite of how that's supposed to go? Wouldn't it be smarter for WR's to have a different workout than OL's and DL's? And how the f*** did that happen with an extremely experienced former NFL S&C coach? Could this also be why we had so many injuries the past 2 seasons?

Maybe I interpreted that the wrong way. If anyone can clear that up that'd be cool.

I wouldn't say that either, but it is another indication of the general lack of discipline. Anytime a player is involved in such incidents, it reflects on the entire team just because he is a part of it. And sadly, Smith will be remembered more for that incident, staying injured, and having one of the hottest girlfriends in team history than his play.

Of course, I still wonder why a player would room with someone not on the team. Doesn't make sense to me.

Josh Smith, VFL.

He's right. The last comment is most telling --- staff was allowing people to cut corners. We had a collection of individuals and not a "team" last season, but we do have some very good players. That's why I feel like a 2-year turnaround is not completely unrealistic this go around. If Pruitt can get these guys to play like a real team, I think we'll see major improvement. We have talent --- we just didn't have leaders on the coaching staff.

Who knows? Kind of hard to draw conclusions just from that. There is so much from the past 2 years that obviously wasn't what we were led to believe. Hell, even the negative rumors seemed to have mostly been understated.

But the injuries in part had to be made worse by changing strength coaches so much. In hindsight, they should have left Lawson in place instead of letting the lunatics run the asylum.

If Butch gets another HC job in the future, somebody needs to throw an egg at his head the first time he says, "individual".

Until we know the full roster, I am not dismissing the possibility that the turnaround might be almost immediate. Yeah, I know that seems nuts, but if we get the right few pieces, and this staff can inspire the guys remaining? We might realize this isn't the same nearly bare table Dooley left.

Sounds like Botch played favorites and didn’t hold everyone to the same standard. Boy did Botch talk a big game. Sold lots of snake oil

In the NFL players have their own trainers and specialists. In the off season they are pretty much on their own. A S&C in college has more players and more responsibility.

Disagree a good bit. Every team has off the field incidents, including some of the most successful and most disciplined on field....look at Alabama.

And honestly, I’d already forgotten about his roommate incident....he’ll not be remembered for that much at all imo. I’ll more remember him for the injuries, for the Georgia TD in 2015 and for dropping a lot of footballs in his time here
