Josh Smith and Butch

If former players do not come forward with their honest assessments of former coaches, then exactly who would we go to for reliable first hand information?

Butch was in over his head. He tried very hard to compensate for his shortcomings. He had too many. It was so apparent that he was out of his league when we beat Georgia on the Hail Mary, and he dropped to his knees and began crying...not the reaction of someone who believed in himself/his team.

So was Josh Smith. He should have played at Carson Newman

I think you're remembering when Curt Maggitt reportedly whupped up on Justin Martin a little bit for stepping on the Power T after being told not to.

Seems like there was an assault charge that was later dropped brought against Smith by a roommate. Could probably look it up but I'm too lazy for that.

Make sense, he never seem authentic to me. I really think Butch had extremely horrible confidence issues

He came up and shook my daughter's and my hand at a vol walk. This was before the Ohio game a couple of years ago and he did not exude the demeanor of a confident coach. He looked scared to me, and it was Ohio!

The man went out of his way for your daughter and your response is a cheap azz insult, says a lot about coach Jones and you.

Oh, sure, you're right about that. Josh and his roommate (who doesn't play football) did get into a fight, and Josh was even--briefly--charged before it was dropped.

But the conversation to which you and I responded was about Jason Croom. It went like this:

Croom never showed promise, he was a message board enigma because of his size.
Incorrect. He showed great flashes but when he wasn't hurt, he often disappeared.
Funny, I watched every game he played in for 4 years and never seen him do anything but avoid contact . As I said he was a message board enigma because of his size ,and the fact he had a family member post on here.
Didn't he kick somebody's arse in the locker room? That's not "avoiding contact"
I think you're remembering when Curt Maggitt reportedly whupped up on Justin Martin a little bit for stepping on the Power T after being told not to.

Since Walkenvol mentioned the locker room, I guessed he was recalling the Maggitt-Martin incident, which did happen there. Initially, no one knew which upperclassman "corrected" Martin, and the guesses included Croom. But Maggitt's role came out a couple of weeks later.

Josh was a good young man, no shame in that he was given opportunities at UT to play football. But he was far from an SEC caliber wide receiver IMO. He dropped about as many or more than he caught for his entire career on The Hill. I get it, local guy, East Tennessee high schooler, but he'll be noted more for the caliber of the women he was photoed with than what he produced on the gridiron.

The fact that he is competing to be on a NFL roster does not help this argument.

Kids from Carson Newman get tryouts also.

You guys make Smith out to be a ProBowler cause he gets a FA tryout. Every FA signs a 3 yr deal because they have to make the team for it to be valid.

I've not got the impression anyone is making him out to be a pro bowler.

Sure it is. The most important aspect of recruiting is the relationship that a HC is selling. Sounds like Butch couldn’t deliver.

I was referring to the previous post talking about what Smith was doing being a "bad look". I didn't see anything Smith was saying or the article as a big deal.

The bad relationship he had with Butch and staff is kind of a big deal when coaches are selling relationships to recruits and their families.

Seems like Josh is throwing Butch under the bus. It’s worse that he says he went to Butch with his concerns and saw no change. Why do that?
