Josh Heupel starts off by congratulating Kellie Harper on a great win and Rick Barnes on a great season. Said those environments were “a big part of our recruiting.” “Today was a great start, great energy, which it should be on Day One.”
Heupel: “So much known versus a year ago, with all the unknowns.” Said there was lots of great teaching from coaches to players, but also player to player, and that they’re keying on leadership development to start the offseason. Hooker, Tank, Tre Flowers a few he mentioned.
Josh Heupel said this is maybe the most mature group of newcomers he has seen in his time as a coach — that they’ve blended seamlessly, which goes back to the work they’ve put in leading up to today.
Heupel on construction on Neyland and training center: “It’s an exciting time to be here with great energy and momentum in this building. (Recruits) are able to see and feel the energy and connection that we have. It’s been a huge part of what we’re doing and where we’re going.” Also mentioned how it adds to this place being a prime destination.
Heupel said Tennessee’s running backs have “dramatically changed their bodies.” Said Justin Williams has been “a fierce competitor; you could see that today.”
Heupel: “We’ve got to find a way to get to the quarterback more.”
On Kelsey Pope as WR coach: “He has all the tools to be a dynamic and elite coach. There’s no doubt he was the right guy for the job. We have great confidence in him.”
Heupel on no spring game: “Everybody in our building is going to miss that opportunity. At the same time, there’s a lot of excitement about what’s going on in our stadium.” Said they’ll have recruiting events and may try to get some people around for scrimmages.
