If he can, he absolutely will. I know this has been mentioned, but ZZ as a grad assistant would be cool. Keeo him here then if the 5th year works, go ahead and have him on the active roster (Udonis Hasllem with the Heat during his last 25 years in the NBA). Obviously, he’s likely prefer to play pro somewhere, but would be cool to imagine it. You’ve got his leadership and bball IQ and also have him playing some. It’s a dumb pipe dream but it’s my dumb pipe dream.

These kids must know something coming for this. Too many guys in portal with no eligibility. Gainey with Davis would be outstanding and Evans is really good too.

Yeah, but they would have to get in the portal before the deadline (yesterday) to even have the option of potentially transferring later. So, they could just be entering just in case.

That being said, JG’s post suggests that he expects the 5th year rule to go through. Plus, he didn’t enter the portal, so he won’t be going elsewhere for that 5th year.

Yes none of our big 3 did, which is good if they do make room for them. I suppose they could pay them NIL to cover a scholarship if they were short spots. Michigan was doing that.

Word is, CRB is holding two schollys open, just in case.
That will work and if by chance they need the 3rd they can use NIL to cover that one. I give Boswell credit but man his minutes seem to be low if we make a few additions. I know they are expecting to be working with 15 as number but would be crazy to go that high, but maybe Barnes would go all in with that.

Would be nice, but not happening. Not trying to be negative. Just pointing out the likelihood Gainey is playing here next year is extremely low.
Definitely low enough where no one should be really be counting on it.
Or coaches need to be ( and no reason to believe they aren't) trying to find two shooting guards for next season asap.

If ZZ is here to play he’s going to play 30 plus.
Obviously. Which is why I kept using the word dream int his scenario, would keep Jakobie here too. I'm well aware it wouldn't happen, for a variety of reasons, that being one.

He'd be the best backcourt player on the roster, no idea why people think he'd have some ceremonial role. Maybe not 30+ because it wouldn't be required like the last two years, but probably 28 at least.
Did you think I was laying it out there as an actual thing that would or should happen? I'm not suggesting "ceremonial" , I'm suggesting(not really even seriously, hence "dream" not playing 38 a game and playing off the ball some while Jakobie runs point, and having options.

I think based on things we heard and little breadcrumbs like this post, it’s pretty clear Jordan Gainey is putting all his eggs in the 5 year rule basket.

And it’s not much of a risk. He doesn’t have big pro prospects. He’d make way more at UT in a 5th year than he would overseas for instance, so what’s it hurt to wait through the summer and see?

His home is Knoxville. His dad is a coach. And he can use our facilities to train through the summer

I’d expect that if the 5th year rule passes, Gainey will 100% be on the roster.
