One of the reasons Tennessee experienced so much attrition in 2017 is because of the number of prospects the Vols hoarded over the summer. From ‘Orange Carpet Day’ in June to when 4-star tailback Ty Chandler announced in mid-August, Tennessee added 14 commits. Half of those players did not end up in signing with the Vols on Wednesday.


Jones was asked if he plans to pivot his philosophy of loading up on prospects during the summer, and Jones simply said, “Each year is different. The most important thing is finding players that fit your recruiting profile.”

Ultimately, Jones was quite pleased with Tennessee’s class and denied rumblings that the Vols had to combat negative recruiting on the trail after failing to meet expectations in 2016.

Instead, after “four straight weeks on CBS, back-to-back 9 win seasons and three bowl championships,” Jones declared that Tennessee was “back.”

“We’re on a three-year venture where it’s the most success we’ve had in Tennessee football since 2002-2004,” he said.

“The most success we’ve had, these kids prior to that were anywhere from maybe 3 to 4 to 5-years-old. What they’ve grown up on Tennessee and now to have Tennessee football back. It’s the most positive [reception] we’ve had in terms of recruiting.”-SEC Country

The worst thing that has happened to Tennessee is that they didn't have a few more difficult seasons. Because then all the negative people would abandon ship. Instead, they remain around *****ing about absolutely everything the team does and the coach says. Frankly, Tennessee needs to prune back about half its fan base and it would be much better off and much better successful. I swear the team could win the National Championship and half the people on the board would respond "we only won by 7, Saban would have won by 21." These should take the easy road and go to Alabama and leave everyone else in peace.

I have no issue with Butch saying Tennessee is back. He seems confident about the team he has. He also has to try to spin a positive light on the program.

Folks have been irate around here for years at Butch's excuses of youth, etc. However, based on the comments I've heard from him this week, Butch seems happy with where the roster is right now. Hopefully we're to the point where we will be able to redshirt many of these newcomers and not have to rely on them for depth like we have in years past.
