“I’m excited about that group,” Jones said Thursday afternoon before the Vols’ second preseason practice in helmets and shoulder pads. “Now, they have a long way to go. They’re still learning what it takes to perform at a high level day in and day out. But I’ve been exceptionally pleased.

“Tyler Byrd has done a remarkable job. Still learning, again, the fine details, but competes every single day. Brandon Johnson has really done a great job. But they’re still puppies. They’re youngsters. Marquez Callaway is doing a good job, as well.

“I think the entire freshman class is doing a good job. And, really, for the first time, we still have a lack of depth at a number of spots, but we’re able to put some threes on the field in team situations, and they’re able to compete and it looks like football. A lot of times, you put the threes out and it looks like (a reporter) playing football. And we all know that (would be) probably not very good.”

That freshman group of WR's could really help out. With that said, looking at our level of skill, still think that we are rotating too many WR's in/out of game. it kills me to have a third and 8 with our three best WR's standing on the sidelines.

My two cents....

Since the 70s, the Vols have almost always had a group of talented wide receivers. Trouble comes when we don't or can't get the ball to them.

While I want W's as much as anyone here on VN does, I believe that a balanced offensive scheme will get us there faster. Go Vols. Fair & Balanced Offense!

If Butch thinks WR X is better in this situation with this play than WR Y, Ill back him up. I think injuries was a bigger problem moving guys around than the coaches preference on who plays when.

I have noticed in the vids that the WRs are less rigid and catching the ball better. Looks like Z has caught on....He was trying to fit a square peg into a round hole with that awkward stance. I hope we see big gains through the air this year. I truly think our passing game is what will make or break us this year in tough games.
