John Ward, Please Come Back

Too many broadcasting schools teach TV techniques... and unfortunately the money is no longer there in radio to pay for the best. The era of Lindsey Nelson is long gone.

Yes that's what my folks used to do. I don't remember many of the great games he called but I will always remember the famous “GIVE HIM SIX!”

I don't remember a lot of the great ones. I am 34, so I don't go back that far :)

I cant stand listening to BK. I wish that they had hired Mike Keith so bad. He makes me want to jump out of my seat when I am listening to to the Titans games. I turn off the tv and listen to him. BK puts me to sleep. Pay Mike money and get him in here. BK blows! Go back to the local news as a sports guy Bob.

Kesling is a good sideline reporter, but not an announcer. He doesn't have the voice.

I for one love football radio calls from the top shelf announcers, and John Ward is definitely one. I've listened to Kessling on both trips to Knoxville and though he was ok, but obviously doesn't have what Ward did.

Eli Gold is starting to wear on me. I really liked having Stabler doing the commentary, but we're getting Phil Steele (from the Browns org i think) to replace Kenny this year. I'm ready for Eli to retire and pass it on to Chris Stewart (UA hoops announcer) and Jay Barker for the commentary (now doing morning show on WJOX-bham).

Another underrated imo is David Kellum at Ole Miss. A homer no doubt, but should be.

And i was there for the misery in '95 - don't need Mr. Ward reminding me any further.

The lesson to be remembered here is to take a moment and count the things in your life that give you enjoyment and pleasure, and enjoy them to the fullest in the moment. Because just like John Ward, someday it may not be there.

As a Vol fan in Birmingham I can empathize. Eli is okay, but his voice grates on me. (Again not that I listen constantly, but if I'm driving to a grocery store or something on Saturday I've got sports radio on... and being in Birmingham 99% of the time it is Eli on the AL game.)

From what I remember hearing of Kenny Stabler I was not a fan. Not trying to be offensive, but the image I think of with Kenny (if I am remembering the right guy on the radio) is one of the guys off of King of the Hill. Not inspiring.

I really like Jay Barker on JOX in the morning. They could kick Tony off the show and just have Al Del Greco and Barker and it'd be great.

Nothing tops "Give... Him... Six!"

If you weren't able to listen to Larry Munson, Ward was OK. Tough to pick best Munson moment. Either the hobnail boot analogy or Walker making Bates his b____h will get him into the announcers' hall of fame.

Munson was fine if you don't care about niggling little details like down and distance, formations, the yardage a play picks up, who makes a catch or a tackle, etc. "Aw right, it's third down and they run a sweep to the left side and WE GOT IM!!!!" is about all Munson gave you. It was completely routine for me to get into the car, flip on the UGA game, get out of the car 10 minutes later, and still have no idea what the score was. Munson was entertaining, but he was not exactly someone who sweated the details.

Larry Munson was the worst I have ever heard. I was forced, and I mean forced to listen to him once for a UT/UGA game. I would have been better off getting telegrams with updates. He got so worked up on one play, that you could not tell what he was saying. Finally you could hear someone in the background say, "The pass was incomplete, it's 2nd down.

Joe Fisher is above him, so that tells you something.

Bingo!

He was terrible to listen to. You had to what for a commercial break, for their scoreboard guy to tell you the score of the game you were listening to.

You're exactly right!! As I get older I begin to realize that I have let alot of things go for granted that they will always be there and thats just not true. John Ward, to me, will never be replaced. He meant as much to Tennessee Football as any player that ever set foot on Shields-Watkins Field.
