i just loved his countdown of the yardages that took so long, ut had actually already converted the PAT and was lining up for the ensuing kickoff.

God I miss John Ward.

Bob Kessling will NEVER, EVER get to John Ward's level.
Kessling is about as emotionally exciting as watching grass grow, in my opinion.

My favorite thing about John Ward was the creative verbs he used when describing a run. For instance, Graham dances, turns, twists, and dives to the 4 yard line.He always made you visualize what was going on.The difference in the announcers of today and people like Ward,Munson, and Cristal is that today's announcers were taught by TV announcers and the Wards and Munsons were raised on radio announcing.Man I miss John Ward.

Munson's great:
"We just stepped on their face with a hob-nailed boot and broke their nose! We just crushed their face!"
-- Georgia's 2001 win over Tennessee

And then this one in Walker's 1980 victory over UT:
"My God Almighty, he ran right through two men! Herschel ran right over two men! They had him dead away inside the 9. Herschel Walker went 16 yards. He drove right over those orange shirts and is just driving and running with those big thighs. My God, a freshman!" -

I remember a lineman recovered a fumble on the 7 yard line and scored and John Ward said something like this....."he stumbled to the 5, tripped over the 4......waddled across the 3.......what did he do?? GIVE HIM 6" cant remember the quote exactly....but it was funny!!

I never thought about that, but I think you're 100% right.

John Ward always sounded like a pure, 100%, lifelong Tennessee FANATIC when he called a game. (Because he, no doubt, WAS)..

Bob Kessling -- and this is just me -- always sounds like a southern transplant who didn't grow up as a Tennessee fan. As a result, his "excitement" during his calling of games sounds rather artificial, or perhaps, forced.

Kessling's been at this for a few years now... and I'm closer to scoring boom-boom time with a playboy bunny than to getting chills from listening to Kessling call a game. It just ain't working for me.

This one is for LIO:

dances, turns, twists, and dives are all verbs, not adjectives.

It's true nobody could "paint" like John. I just wish he'd stayed around long enough to call some UT basketball games with Pearl as HC.

Okay, I don't know where my mind was when I was writing that one but I promise my knowledge of grammar is better than it showed on that one. You got me vader. I'll try not to slip up again.I edited it so it should be corrected now.

Lot of negativity on Kessling here, but I was on my way home from work listening to that Kentucky basketball game in Knoxville last year and it was awesome.....

John Ward is a BROADCASTING GOD
