without speculation - good luck here - what is the situation with Fulky regarding his lack of production as of late?

someone mentioned in another thread he is dealing with about (3) injuries but that is all i've ever read about him being physically compromised.

if this has been discussed elsewhere, please enlighten me, thanks!

Defenses have been really working hard to keep him from catching in the post. He hasn't been able to get the passes in there where he likes to score. Most of his points have come on catching several feet away from the basket and making a move from there. Last season he was getting a lot more freedom in the post now the double team comes everytime he catches so not a lot of opportunities. Just keep driving the freshmen the more they score the more defenses will have to loosen up their defense on Fulkerson.

He got many of his touches last year around the FY line. And he would make a drive toward the basket. Got a lot of trips to the FT line.

It looks like he's fallen into that cycle where he's not hitting his shots so now on his shots he looks like he's trying to almost guide it into the basket; and that almost always makes things worse. There's just something weird about his release on shots. On many of them lately the minute it leaves his hand you can tell it's not going in.

If he decides to come back next year, I sure hope that he, Gaines, and Pember will hit the S&C room and gain 10-20 pounds so he won't have to rely on all the flopping he does. Need to also build up the stamina.

Difficult to get a 1 on 1 match up and make that move to the left against a zone.

When it’s going band it goes really bad. Can’t believe he missed the perfect lob from SV.

Fulkerson was the best player in the SEC the last 3 weeks of last year. I watch him 1 on 1 during a game. He literally is getting bullied away from “his spot” and is not fighting back for it. He has no aggressiveness. Is it injury, “I don’t know”, but you can see it literally every game Since the SEC has started. I hope for his NBA future that he can regain it.

Theres something more than injury going on. Fulky is a guy that has always played the game relentlessly. He’s a high motor guy that fights for everything on the court. Dives after lose balls, scraps for rebounds, battles in the paint, goes at guys that are physically bigger and stronger than him, etc. This year he can barely jump. He struggles to sprint down the floor. He’s exhausted after only a few trips up and down the floor. He has zero strength and backs away from physical play cause he simply can‘t handle it. I don’t know what’s wrong with him but it sure seems like something more than a couple injuries.

I would bet money we find out he got Covid sometime last summer or fall. The effects of that can greatly impact stamina, breathing, energy - there are people who've described being unable to catch their breath or breathe without pain for months after the infection "resolved." Cardiovascular inflammation, or just plain old "lethargy" or lack of energy that takes weeks or months to improve. Just ... a lot of mucking up the works. These kids are athletes who've operated at peak output on a daily basis to get where they are. Imagine being unable to exercise or workout for months - losing muscle or fitness is a hell of a lot easier than adding it. I don't know that he had it but the more I've watched him the more I've thought about it being the explanation for his struggles.

I think he is stronger than before, and that was the plan this year, but I've got a feeling that COVID-19 had other plans. So yes, he needs more weight and strength. I would love to see one season where he was the one doing the pushing around.

I can see this. I'm not sure he had covid or not but the struggle afterwards can take some time to recover.

Wow:

"His right wrist is inured. I think he had a problem with a finger on his left hand. He had wisdom teeth surgery not long ago and he couldn’t eat solid good for a while and lost weight. There is speculation that he has COVID before the season began and it seemed like he had an injured back a couple of weeks ago. He’s been kind of a mess. "

He likely doesn't have much of an NBA future, but everything else you've noticed is accurate.

I think if Keon & Jaden and Triple J do close to what they did Offensively last night. The double teams on Fulk will stop. Can’t double if you got 3 other guys scoring 60 points. Although UK’s D is soft so it wait and see how it plays out and if this is even halfway sustainable.

Nobody considering the obvious: he cut his hair and it sapped him of his power (although it does look a lot better now)

Fulky is beat up. Refs let him get pushed around a lot but I think the inconsistency of the others shooting the 3 has really hurt him some. He has been focus#1 of the opponents all year. In the Kansas game once the 3s started falling, what happened with Fulky? He started getting inside and could work 1-1. Didn’t he end up with like 16 after barely scoring in the first half?

Then they go to OM and can’t hit anything in 2nd half. More zone and ganging up on Fulky.

I think consistency on some outside shooting ( not going 6-8 one game and 0-6 the next two) would solve a lot of the offensive problems

3 point shooting isn’t the only problem. We can keep teams from setting up half court traps and zones with better defensive rebounding, which lets us get out on the break. Coach moving JJJ closer to the basket at 12:00 was huge. It got our best rebounder in the best position to spur the fast break. It’s nuts that we annihilated Kansas with 0 fast break points.

I agree. There’s an MLB player from Knoxville that had this happen. He basically had these severe after effects and could not physically do much. A hand injury doesn’t explain his physical exhaustion issues. There are some who had COVID early on and still not able to physically perform competitively.

I think most of those traps are set up after made baskets.
