John Adams

After most of the real journalists and sports writers have been laid off from the Knoxville News Sentinel, how does this guy still have a job?

Asking for a friend.

Simple. His columns generate clicks from sites all across the Gannet network. Their business model is based on clicks. If he writes a negative column on Tennessee and it gets a click from links on the websites of the papers in Jackson, MS or Montgomery, AL, then they have succeeded. He is perfect for their current model.

Yeah, kind of the same reason the National Enquirer is still at the checkout counter at the store..... enough idiots still help them make money....

I don’t like his articles so I don’t read them. Problem solved on my end.

I don't think that he needs to be a devout optimist to write for the Vols, but he could sprinkle some pro-vols columns in from time to time. He can still be a realist and maintain some form of hope that the good things are good. It seems like anything that is considered good news to most of us is just another opportunity for him to dash everyone's hopes and keep expectations low.

He's still employed because people read his columns. Want him fired? Don't read his columns and let KNS know that you won't read them.

I did that very thing back in 08. I wouldn’t even know this guy was still alive if it wasn’t for posters starting threads about him here.

The KNS is a Guild shop. He probably one of the most senior writers on staff. He's been there a LONG time.

He is a columnist. He is supposed to be controversial. Obviously, his column is fairly popular. The union might protect his job, but it's pretty unlikely it can protect his column. He writes it because people read it.

Before the old Knoxville Journal (the actual newspaper, not the old gossip sheet) went out of business in the late 80s, a John Adams would never have been hired. By the third or fourth snarky editorial, the drop in subscriptions would have been profound. Back then, being THAT "controversial" was not leading to long term employment. Good Ole Days.

As to him being here a long time, I don't remember reading anything with his name on it until the Journal went away. Of course I could be wrong, but I think I am right.

And your high expectations have been realized when?

Who is John Adams.

Truth be known the Newsless probably isn't paying him anything. By the by...………..who reads the Newsless. Pooe ol'John is probably the only one who thinks he has any credence. John combined with Hiiyams is a couple ear marked for bankruptcy.

The Maryville Times has a better Sports page. They stopped local High School coverage long long time ago. The RAG is dead and good riddance.

I can't say that I have had high expectations at any point recently. My post didn't mention any high expectations. What I did say, and I'll elaborate, is that there have been signs of life from the program that have not been recognized or acknowledged nearly as much as the negatives. For example: The games that the team played that showed fight as opposed to laying down i.e Kentucky and Auburn. Another example of a reason to be positive was seeing CJP angry on the sideline and making comments that indicated that he expected better and that he would recruit in a way that would ensure that we don't see the same poor performance that we have seen this last season. And the recruiting class that was signed on early signing day, albeit a lower class than a good portion of the SEC, it was a good recruiting class considering the season that we had in comparison to the majority of other power 5 programs. There are plenty of reasons to be negative, and I am sensing that you see life through a pretty negative lens, but the fact that he writes for the Vols to me says that he should recognize good things as well as the bad.

No, it would not solve any of the problems, but it would allow the paper to put a more objective guy in the lead dog spot and one that might earn the respect of players and coaches and be able to gain access to more comprehensive fact sets they could spin into their work and gain respect and readership from the community. He is an old guy who determined his methods would employ the snarky, combative, and sensational modes we get to experience with the Jim Romes and even the Paul Finebaums of the sports journalism world. I won't listen to them either. I will never trust them or those like in kind. I recognize they are free to produce whatever they want whenever they want. But I find it odd that the paper is not more interested in garnering a wider range of respect within the community with their more senior positions. We older guys got to read about a lot bad things accurately and completely covered by guys named Siler, West, and Byrd among others and they did not have to stoop to methods that not only were not welcomed, but not accepted by the school or large portions (maybe majority) of the paying readership.
It's almost like media outlets put sucky people in.spit where.l they wont generate profits, on purpose huh?

You find it weird that people that "dont read articles" always seems too link them and then complain about the author? It's almost like they read the articles, except we all know they dont.....or something...
