Players cannot enter the transfer portal now so if Joey A comes back we will have 4 scholarship QBs or UT will either not offer Joey A a scholarship or pull the new QBs scholarship.

It would look ugly to not offer Joey A, of course, but it would look awful to pull the new QBs scholarship also.

The portal is closed. No players that aren't already in the portal can transfer until December 2026 when the portal reopens.
Since Joey isn’t in the portal I’m guessing he’s at least enrolled at UT.

For Joey to to file his own suit. I have to think UT has told him he has a home there if he can get an injunction.
Since technically he’s out of eligibility would he even be able to put his name in the portal while he waited for something to be resolved?

Can’t see him sitting out a year and trying to play next year if allowed but I guess anything is possible. May not have a choice if he doesn’t come back to UT. Too late to enroll at most schools for spring.

Right. Joey is probably preparing to file in TN State Court which will hopefully be friendlier and grant an injunction (like Chambliss did in MS.)

If he gets it, we're stuck paying 4 QBs this year because there's no "Nico portal" anymore after Spring practice.

When we got a 3rd scholarship QB that seemed to indicate UT felt there's a good chance Joey A wasn't getting his injunction, IMO.

If Joey A comes back, we're essentially wasting whatever NIL we're paying the new QB and the scholarship funding for him as he'll either be a QB3 or even QB4 on the depth chart and likely never see more than a few snaps at UT.

While it's POSSIBLE we'd need to start QB3 (Hi Peyton) there's no guarantee that wouldn't be Faizon. The new QB is really only useful to us if Joey A doesn't come back.

It just seems odd Joey would spend that type of money this late in the game and not have a place to play locked in. Seems like Ole Miss are pushing the Chambliss case and paying or at least some collective/booster paying and fighting the court battle because they’ve made it known they want him back.

Is he even going to play for us if he does win? Will we pony up $1.?M at this point?
Not saying we would or wouldnot, or like to or not, but can he play anywhere else? Is he in the portal?

Not a clue what his or our options REALLY are,

He might play for a bargain betting on improving his draft POTENTIAL more here than anywhere else. Would not expect starting guarantees here.

Good post. Yes this is what I was referring to in my post that Heuple would have some real issues to deal with. Not saying it was a bad thing for Joey to come back. Would feel bad for GMac as he probably transfers out, he cannot afford to sit another season. Who knows what the new QB would do and hope Faizon is willing to sit and learn for one season.

Since this technique of "getting another year" is relatively new, this is possibly a pro bono effort by the lawyers anticipating more business in the "let's play forever in college" market which seems to be growing. Who knows?

Chambliss gets more attention because he was just in the CFP and is a pretty dynamic player. Ole Miss is remarkably better if he plays. Politely, Joey A isn't that big of a piece in the UT puzzle, apparently, given that we've essentially moved on.

I say just the opposite. These are supposed to be student-athletes, not professional students. I would love to see his original SATs and GRE. I don't support any player sticking around for NIL because they have no NFL shot. If allowed, they should become employees of the University and part of a collective bargaining agreement.

Federal law has made it clear that the new era and corresponding rules givern, not what any fan thinks.

Doubt Joey is paying anything unless he wins the case. If you were JA, would you offer to pay an attorney 30-50% of your 2026 "pay" only if he got you an additional year? And, if you were an attorney, and thought you had a decent chance of winning the appeal, wouldn't you take that deal? Joey only has upside, no downside, while giving the attorney a huge incentive to give it his best shot. The attorney is taking maybe a 50/50 shot at a really big payday.

What issues? Gmac can't transfer and be eligible for '26. It would give him another year to beef up and learn the system. It would also incentivize Heupel to play both GMac and Faizon in some games in '26 to get them ready for '27. And, if GMac is as good as some think, he might beat out Joey by the end of the season anyway--all while dramatically improving our QB depth. I really don't see any downside.

Players get hurt, bird in hand.

So does this means Joey hearing on Feb 10 isn't going to happen?
