Jobless Claims Soar to 3.3 million; 6.6 million this week

Hell, no. I am a rule breaker by nature have gotten away with plenty in my day. Now, I am a diabetic and have a weakened immune system, so I need to practice social distancing and appreciate efforts to curb the spread of the virus.
Then you are one who should self quarantine, why does everyone in the country need to quarantine which will collapse the economy? Let’s get people like you and very old to stay home and let the rest of us keep the country running

I am staying at home. And I appreciate the effort of the government to try to minimize the spread of the disease.

You absolutely should self-quarantine. And don’t answer your door and don’t let the grandkids over for awhile.

I’m an early 40 something in great health. I’m at the point where it wouldn’t be the worst thing if I got it, if I haven’t already. I would rather being walking around with some sort of immunity than nothing at all.

That’s not being a tough guy either, it’s a rational decision. My dad has diabetes and is 70, I’m certainly not going to see him until this blows over.

Disagree. I think a lot of his support stems from him constantly trolling the left, which is where a lot of his hate from that side comes from.

For the most part people looked past his porn star and self-grandizing stuff. It’s quite the stretch to equate support for him with support for racism.

I think the trolling is a part of it. We've actually had results during his term and that's worthy of support of at least some of the policies.

The racism stuff is nonsense. I don't think he's racist and agree that supporting him is not endorsing racism.

I remain unimpressed with him as a person and consider him to be a buffoon. He has several policies I disagree with. I didn't vote for him and wouldn't vote for him but I don't hate him and cheer for him to fail.

I think you fail to understand that the modern dem has gone completely anti-American. Look at the congress. The congress is what will ruin this country worse than biden will
Wrong. Democrats aren't anit american. The modern, vocal, and media-adored socialists in the party are anti american. But they do not represent all democrats.
In truth, which you will not like hearing, there is no difference between a status quo republican and status quo democrat once you get past the rhetoric .

A little amusing to watch the Facebook generation think they can sustain an economy via take out and delivery.

On the one hand I applaud the effort, on the other hand the apparent ignorance saddens me.

That is not a dumb comment and the analogy is apt. You getting triggered by it shows how paper skinned you really are. Trump was a long time reprobate before he ran for office. There wasn't a bank on the eastern seaboard that would do business with him.

You ladies cannot tolerate any criticism of him. I think it is ironic Trump hung his whole shtick on the economy and now it is in the tank. It will be interesting to see if people blame him for the economy as much as you conservatives wanted to praise him for it.
I'll criticize him with you tit for tat. But I don't give a rat's rear end about his attitude or what the media says about him. I care deeply about his dumb policies.

It's a cynical take by the President. He's more worried about the economy than saving lives. If he wants to do something, he should have gotten off his fat @$$ two months ago and ordered an increase in medical supplies and ventilators. He still is lax in doing that.

For the life of me I can't fathom how people don't see that economic collapse is bad for lives too. The exemplars in handling this virus (S Korea and Singapore) have not shut down the way we have. Even Dr. Birx has explained that we used a blunt tool to get ahead of the spread but once we get sufficient data we can use more precise tools (ala S. Korea) which doesn't shut down the economy.

If you don't think the Depression cost lives you just don't understand how the economy is linked to health and life. It's not about the stock market.

I'd be more critical of Trump if he wasn't looking for ways to get the economy going as soon as feasible.

The economy will rebound once everyone gets back to work and businesses reopen. It's not like there will be permanent and unfixable economic problems after that.

I love how it never enters your mind that you put forth a crappy alternative with the same smarmy, dismissive attitude that you are exemplifying here.

Frankly, I can’t believe the Democrats screwed it up this bad either and let Trump happen. You can’t beat a populist wave by ignoring it.
I've told many liberals I know this, and have said from 2016, that the election of Trump said way more about Hillary than it did about Trump. Think about upsets in sports...when Michigan lost to App St, did that say more about Michigan, or more about App St?

None of them want to hear it though.

Purple gave you the real honest truth , just read the part about being a rule breaker . “ I’m a rule breaker by nature . “ NOW “ I’m a diabetic with a weakened immune system “ . My take .. when I was young and healthy, I was a rebel , I would have been right there b!tching with you about this nonsense and how it’s wrecking our economy probably for decades , but now that I’m old , frail and compromised, I think the government has a right to force us to do whatever they say .

You are guessing and have no idea either way .

Depends on how long it's down - tons of businesses have shut down. Lost revenue is not recoverable for any service industry and service jobs make up the bulk of jobs.

Those of us with secure jobs will be fine but real economic damage is being done every day. I have a class full of graduating college seniors who's job prospects went from excellent to questionable in just a few weeks. Add a couple more months of this and they may be unemployed for a year or more as companies adjust and reassess their needs.

The 2 TRILLION they just made up out of thin air says otherwise.

We are spending twice as much as we make. And you think the economics will just blow over in a year?

Just like Trump is guessing we'll be fine in two weeks.

In your eyes, what will prevent a restoration of economy?

Being shut down to the point that employers can’t justify opening back up . The amount of start up money for new companies to fill the openings, lack of employment interest in workers when the government teet is just too good to turn lose of , the way banks handle existing loans , foreclosures , repos ... there’s so many variables that will have to be taken into account that there’s zero way of knowing . The longer it stays shut down the more these unknowns become factors .

He is hoping we will and trying to move his team towards that goal rather than just waiting for it to happen.

As for your second question I can see companies having hiring freezes; maybe bringing back most of their employees (assuming the company can survive until then - many will not). So I doubt everyone that had a job will get that same job back in any short time period (1 year). That means the new employees to the work force may be frozen out or take the jobs of people that were laid off; furloughed. We have an indefinite hiring freeze and I'm betting some of those open lines will not return for the foreseeable future.

I'd say we'd be lucky to get back to where we were in 2 or 3 years and that's assuming no other economic shocks.

Our national debt is currently $23.6T. Adding $2T makes it $25.6T. Our GDP is now $21.6T. Adding the new debt makes our debt-to-GDP ratio $25.6T ÷ $21.6T = 118.5%. The highest ever in the US was 122% after WW II and the Korean War.

LOL

US banks were lending to Trump, it’s an easy google.

This virus is not Trumps fault and regardless of who occupies the office an event like this would be similar.
