Just no to sugar in cornbread, can't stand it. Tastes like a sorry attempt at cake. My wife's a transplanted Yankee and she loves that crap. I haven't had a decent piece of cornbread since my granny passed. :thud:

Might as well get the Duncan Hines brownie box and bake that instead.

Bacon grease in with the mix. I'll have to try the butter Crisco.

What you were talking about on top of the stove - my grandmother always called that a hoecake.

Mom used bacon grease which produced a eighth to quarter inch, dark brown crust. Heavenly. Never despoiled by dipping in milk or bean juice.

Well if they used yellow cornmeal it makes perfect sense they'd put sugar in it as it's like cake, may as well use some Karo syrup with it. But my grandmother only used white cornmeal poured in a cast iron skillet hot and greased with hog lard. Pouring that batter in I can still close my eyes and hear it sizzle. It would make that crust and then she'd bake it. I haven't had decent cornbread since she passed years ago. Way to much yellow cornmeal "cornbread" around to suit me. If it's yellow it's a corn cake in my book.

I can. I've beaten it before until it was chunky crumbs. Then gathered it up and put atop my cayene flavored pinto beans. Then along with mashed sweet potato, turnip greens, squash and a frosted glass of Bud; claimed victory.

Winner here....if you add the onion in the beans with fresh tomatoes and cucumbers on the side.

Then you should use some of these recipes and show her how it's done. 😁

Here's the only "sugar product" that any southerner will put in/on cornbread.

I'm partial to jalapeno in mine. Occasionally, my better half will make one with habanero for me. My momma used to make a breakfast cornbread with cut up boiled egg whites and pre-cooked ground sausage mixed into it, which we would pour syrup on.

My grandma puts creamed corn and sour cream in her recipe. I know there may be other ways to make cornbread, as you all have mentioned. But....she turns 90 this year, and when she's gone, that will be how I remember her. She always made it for every church supper, birthday dinner, family get together. And it really is delicious. Not dry. I love how food takes us back. Cornbread is my grandma's thing, and chicken and dumplins are my granny's things.

Completely unrelated, I have no idea why I've always struggled with my weight.
