Jerry Colquitt's take on Hunter and Patterson

Colquitt's comments were predicated on Chaney returning, which I don't see happening, which means I don't see both returning either. Would they benefit? No doubt, but just don't see it happening.

if staff doesn't return you may see bray, hunter, and patterson testing the waters...along with ju'wuan james..zak fulton and james stone...dallas thomas will be gone along with riveria....and zak rogers....if that were to happen...offense goes back to ground 0

That was really awful that Jerry got his knee blown up on the 7th play of the game. I wonder what the '94 team would have looked like with a SR QB. I know that thrust Manning into action, but it bounced around from Helton till Miss St , then back and forth between he and Brandon. Still whooped Va Tech hardcore

Hunters gone. To be honest, with the way he's played this season I don't care. He's afraid to get hit. Diving on the ground, dropping balls when he knows he might take a good hit. I honestly see CP goin. Those guys are in a tough situation. Do you stay where it looks like there not getting the coaching needed for the next level, or hope a team picks em up and polishes there skills to NFL quality.

That was so sad when he went down like that and it changed our whole season.

He's right about Hunter and Patterson though.

Both need to get real serious about learning to run precise routes the same way every time like Z Ro learned to do so the QB can always depend on them being at the right spot when they're supposed to be there.

Both also need to get stronger and more physical and learn to use their bodies better to shield the DB's out and to go take the ball stronger so DB's have less chance to knock it down or make a INT.

Coming back next season will make them both many Millions more $$$ on their 1st NFL contract and that's important because you never know when an injury or a better player can jump in and end your NFL career.

Bray isn't ready either but I won't be upset if he leaves after this season because it's time for our 2 backup QB's to get more time on the field in real games.

I worry alot about CDD and staff getting fired because I think if they get fired we'll see lots of our best players either hit the NFL early or leave to go to other schools and play.

I can see us having zero QB's, very few linemen, our best RB's and DB's and LB's leaving and we'll become much worse overnight than kentucky and Vandy will be for several years.

Our program is very fragile right now and we're just now starting to turn the corner so if CDD and staff are fired we have to get a huge homerun hire for the HC and for all the assistant positions because unless we also get great assistant coaches that are also great recruiters we could go into a serious downward tailspin that could destroy us for a decade or longer.

That would kill me because I'm too old to wait 10 years to see us as a powerhouse in the SEC again and at least getting a legit shot at another Crystal football.

I want to get up on gamedays and be able to EXPECT to Win most every game again.

As I stated a couple weeks back JH's head is already on the NFL and has been since we fell behind 14 to UF.

Patterson on the other hand is looking more likely he returns. I have been to 3 games this year and he needs a lot and I mean a lot of work on his route running. He is a gifted athlete no doubt but the NFL is a results oriented business and right now I don't see a team using anything higher than a 4th rounder on him because based on what I have seen it will take over a year or two to get him were he needs to be on running routes in the NFL. You never know though.

I think Bray and Patterson will come back next year...

I think Bray, has unfinished business and wants to prove that he can win vs the Elite of the SEC.

I think Patterson still has alot to improve on, and waiting another year will improve his draft stock alot.

Hunter on the other hand.....He has a kid, and I think he doesnt want to take a chance on geting hurt. (again)

But I think if Dooley is gone next year, They all 3 leave......Maybe Bray still stays, but I doubt it.

If they all 3 leave After season ends.

I think Hunter will be a Middle 1st rounder

Bray will be a early 2nd rounder.

And Patterson will be a Late 2nd rounder or early 3rd rounder.

Only if Hunter didn't "drop" just about every ball when the opponent has a good shot at him, I might believe he would want to stay a year. However, it's very clear he just wants to end the season healthy and go to the league next year.

Are you saying this because you don't believe Chaney has done a good job or because you think the whole staff will be gone? The offense is not the problem, and Chaney's play calling has gotten better. He has finally realized how much the running game helps us and he has stuck with it more and more. I would hate to see Chaney go.

You make some good points my friend and you want to see Chaney stay at UT.

Other people want Pittman or Graham or other coaches stay at Tennessee.

Some people are actually being realistic and seeing the progress being made even though that progress is slower than any of us want to see.

Most here know nothing about coaching or totally rebuilding a complete program and they only look at Wins and losses and that's very shortsighted IMO.

We actually do have some very good coaches on both sides of the ball but those that over expected will never admit they were wrong when they said our Vols would win 9, 10 or more games this year.

There's much more to being a good Head Coach and he's actually mostly a manager of coaches, players, recruiting and many more things the average fan knows nothing about.

CDD is actually a good program manager and he's not in fear of making a big change to make the team and program much better in the long term and the proof of that is making the switch to the 3-4 defense.

CJC is actually a good QB coach and OC and to doubt that when he developed Drew Brees is really dumb.

Pittman is a very good O line coach.

Graham is a very good RB coach.

Fact is that most of our coaches are good coaches despite all the hate around here for them and the W/L record in only the 1st year of a totally new D system and D coacxhing staff.

Kelly at Notre Dame is doing very well now with 3 years in the 3-4 and the same DC running things and the 3-4 is the best D there is but it takes 2 years to learn it all and even longer to recruit the right players to fit all the positions well and get them trained and ready to start.

If CDD is fired then we will also lose alot of good coaches too and many of them are also known to be really good recruiters like CDD and CSS are.

AD Hart is the only person to decide and we'll either keep CDD and all these good coaches/recruiters or we'll lose them all and start all over again from scratch with all new coaches, a new O system, a new D system, a new ST system and whatever players that don't leave tennessee will have to start learning new systems all over again and next year will be just as bad as this year has been.

It's VERY rare that a new Head Coach will come in and want to keep any of the old coaching staff.

You just can't have things both ways.

My greatest fear is that if we fire CDD and staff that we'll see lots of our players either leave early for the NFL or transfer out to other schools.

I can see us with zero QB's next year because Worley and Peterman may say enough of Tennessee, several of our O linemen, RB's and WR's gone too.

I can easily see some of our D linemen, DB's and LB's leaving too.

Our program is just starting to turn the corner and we're very fragile right now so it wouldn't take alot to make our whole program implode and we'll be starting all over again.

Unless we get a true Homerun hire at HC and get great assistant coaches and good recruiters then our Tennessee program could go backwards for a decade or more because Tennessee simply is NOT a great destination spot for coaches no matter how much we love Tennessee.

I agree with Jerry that both need another year and that neither will go in the 1st once it is all said and done - and yes i know where mcshay has Hhunter right now

CP is an athlete playing football - needs a lot of work in a lot of areas but route running as many have mentioned is certainly priority #1

Jhunter - drops have killed him this year - he also doesnt meet ball at highest point on deep ball which is really suprising after what he did his freshman year - also his production just hasnt been there to be a 1st rounder, he is 4th in SEC in yds, 4th in receptions, 8th in top 10 on avg, and tied for 8th in TD's - especially in an offense that throws a lot (3rd in SEC in attempts) that doesnt scream elite 1st round NFL production

If Dooley is retained, I think they all stay, except maybe Hunter cause he has a kid; but if the staff is fired, I think they all leave ....

hmmm, besides me constantly bashing Chaney I haven't seen anything official to indicate he won't be here. That's also assuming CDD returns. Which he will unless we lose again in the next 4 games.
Any insight to Chaney getting canned?

I don't think anyone's said this so i'll go ahead and say it:

If CP comes back next year, he could make a serious run for the Heisman as WR/PR/KR. So long as we win some more freakin' games! Bottom line, he's that good!

Maybe. He certainly is that talented.

I agree about CP. But back on subject - Correct me if I am wrong, but hasn't Jerry Colquitt slammed the University every chance he could because of his injury? I'm old and feeble and most times my sip of choice takes hold, but I seem to remember an article, perhaps it was last summer, where he blasted the University and anybody connected to the real U? Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm almost certain that this wasn't the first time he took shots at our program. Again, if I'm wrong, blast away.

If they leave, I can see Hunter as a 2nd rd, CP 3rd and heck of a steal, Bray 7th round or so. Bray has had close to 3 years with little progress. No way he's in the first few rounds.

And THAT falls on the coaching staff. That's what I always said about Casey Clausen. Imagine if he had Cutcliffe instead of Randy Sanders. He was good, but, like Bray, he wasn't any better the day he left Knoxville than he was the day he arrived.

They all need to stay.

Hunter drops too many passes.

CP is still a novice at WR.

Bray hasn't beaten any high level SEC competition, and loses the ball in high pressure situations.

I hope our O-line stay together, but I don't know enough to comment.

If UT's offense stays together and the D makes some drastic improvements, UT should have a nice season next year.

Go Vols!
