I've heard that the team gets to decide to whom they give Super Bowl rings. I heard this because last year the Colts apparently decided as a team to give Super Bowl rings to everybody, including administrative staff (secretaries), scout team players, a player that was cut by the team a couple weeks before the players in order to pick up additional depth at another position, etc. It seemed like an extremely classy move. They said that they won it as a team, and the whole team deserved the rings.

If the Giants don't give Shockey a ring, someone needs to be punched in the face. They nearly missed the playoffs, making all 10 regular season wins extremely important. He helped get most of those.

in baseball rings go to any player that had any part of the championship season. After that it's the decision of upper management as to what staff members get a ring. I would imagine that rings true in all professional sports.
