If you have been holding your breath and waiting for Jeremy Pruitt to announce Tennessee’s starting quarterback for the week 1 matchup against West Virginia, go ahead and breathe.

You may not know who the Vols’ starter will be until the end of the season opener.

In an interview on Saturday with Voice of the Vols Bob Kesling, Pruitt continued to hold back on determining a starter, saying they “may play both” against West Virginia.

“To me, it’s hard enough to get one quarterback,” said Pruitt, “If you can get one quarterback, that’s great. If you can have two or three, you need to give them an opportunity.”

The two candidates to start for Tennessee are redshirt sophomore Jarett Guarantano and grad transfer Keller Chryst, who came to Knoxville from Stanford to play out his final year of eligibility. Behind Guarantano and Chryst are sophomore Will McBride and incoming freshman and former 3-star JT Shrout.

Pruitt did not provide any certainty about how many quarterbacks he will play next Saturday, but emphasized that he wants to get whoever starts the game on the bench some reps.

I think he loves Shrout and both gaurantano and Chryst end up sitting the bench. I predict JT Shrout will be our starter by the Florida game and not look back.

That's an incredibly bold statement that has, in my opinion, close to 0% chance of happening. I highly doubt Pruitt is going to come in here and place his first season in the hands of a true freshmen quarterback.

He said that he “wants” to get whoever starts the game on the bench some reps not that he “would play two quarterbacks”. More vague talk and another knee jerk reaction from the faithful.

And just because he wants to doesn't mean he will. If whoever starts is having a good game and it's a back and forth fight he would be a fool to change that up.

If the starter stinks it up and/or struggles with no show of promise to move the offense, we will see the other QB. If the starter shines or is managing the game in a positive way, IMO he stays in the game. In the big picture, this game is huge as far as the season is concerned, and Pruitt knows it. He will not gamble until he has to.

I kinda doubt that, but I do think Shrout is the future.

We're screwed

Chryst won at Stanford, he can play QB, we may be in better shape at QB than some think, we'll know more after next Saturday.

It's not time to panic just yet, saying we're screwed is premature.
You ever been premature op, tell the truth:)

Go Vols
