It's not going away. Why someone makes less then someone else is not a new concept. Many on this board like to pretend it is. Be marketable and NIL will be taken care of. Don't like it as a player? Then F off. You get nothing. You think suddenly you will make tons in Columbia, SC. GTFO.

I think it’s more likely Banks’ absence and a lackadaisical attitude snowballed into a major embarrassment.

After hundreds of legal investigations, experience tells me carelessness causes more problems than malfeasance does.

The most logical scenario to me is Banks was suspended for violating team rules (missed practice/meeting). This fueled his anger and he happened to walk across the T in the process. He got called out on it by Hooker, which led to a verbal exchange and Banks started mouthing off about NIL while refusing to do what he is supposed to when stepping on the T. Milton separated them as they were jawing with each other. They said ok we are good with each other and went on their way.

From a 3rd party perspective (a different player), this could all look like it stemmed from NIL. Not all players are as informed as others. Rumors spread, people take sides, tempers flare.

I could be way off, and I probably am, but logically that scenario makes the most sense to me.

Sure, but how is that different than in the NFL? And, it’s not as if players weren’t already getting paid.

It’s not exactly socialism up there in the league. It’s the haves and have nots. And in that case it’s the actual team saying one player is are worth “X” while another is worth only “Y.” In the case of college, the team doesn’t directly control what the player is paid.

Hooker, for example, who has proven his value, has an NIL deal that is paltry compared to Julian Phillips, who got a deal that could pay out over $600k. And that was before he ever took even a free throw attempt.

Plausible but I wouldn’t think missing a meeting or late for practice would get him left home for a game where the playoffs are on the line. There are other punishments for that. I have to believe there was more to it than that.

In the NFL everyone is employed with guaranteed negotiated salaries

College players are not employed with salaries or guarantees.

85 D1 players are employed with full ride lifetime scholarships.

NIL is antithetical to a team mentality in college.

My guess is that Banks has been a pain in the neck this year with his production down, perhaps leading to a bad attitude and/or a few minor rule violations. He missed a practice, which was the final straw. The Coach decided to teach him a lesson with a one game suspension, thinking Tennessee did not need him against South Carolina, and, more importantly, to try to refocus him for the upcoming games. He and Hooker had some words later in the week, but nothing major that would have got him suspended, but it reinforced to the coach that Banks needed to get refocused.

I quoted both of these but they're 2 different issues...... NIL and Jeremy Banks. Both takes are very good.

NIL shouldn't be any different than the salary differences in the NFL. Certainly NFL linemen are well compensated but it's not what "skill positions" are paid. Top LBs and corners, as a rule, also aren't making what top RBs and QBs are paid.

The world isn't "fair" like that and NIL won't be "fair" like that either. Some jobs are worth more to the team and those players will get more NIL money usually.

NIL isn't going anywhere but neither is the Manning QBs getting far more commerical offers than any of the O Linemen who helped make their careers. Suck it up, guys...... life sucks in the trenches and always has and always will in any job.

The Hyams insights in the video about the Jeremy Banks situation seems to confirm rumors about an altercation between Hooker and Banks related to the locker room T AND that Banks missed a practice/meeting Monday before the game.

Was Banks already in the doghouse and this stuff pushed him to the "held out a game" level, Hyams didn't know. Listen and make your own judgement about what might have led to the terrible effort in South Carolina.

You’d need to look at the snaps played each year comparisons to make much of that tackles stat.

It might be somewhat difficult to make a tackle while not in the game as the coaches are getting more game time experience for others.

He hasn't started in 3 games this year so he could be having some personal issues . After last year he should have went pro but he came back and it hasn't really helped him . Now team wise if he is a team player then he was rewarded but he also let the team down.

I can understand the defensive leader, who has been here for ALL the crap, not responding well to the offensive leader, who’s only been here for two years, calling him out in the locker room. There would be a high probability of one telling the other to “step back” in much, much more colorful language.

Kinda like Big Al telling Peyton to STFU in the locker room years ago.

While Banks plays nowhere near the level of Al they do seem to share a tendency towards a rather feisty personality.😂

Maybe Heupel felt he needed to meet with the team leaders before a "no coaches" meeting or maybe Heupel felt things were "too raw" to make a private meeting productive...... and there just wasn't enough time for things to calm and have a meeting before the game.

Whatever happened, we all saw a team more than bubble off level last Saturday. The guys and the coaches need to pull together from here.

Other than that, the court has told the NCAA they can't control NIL earnings by players. The NCAA can only make sure the schools aren't officially funding the NIL and whatnot.

Because the linemen might not like it, even the NFL can't tell Tom Brady he can only make so much money from his NIL, commercials, etc.

The NCAA and schools would get sued and the court said as much when the lawsuit starting NIL was settled.

Midweek, and by then Banks is said to have already known he wasn’t playing Saturday. Hooker calling him out then was likely guaranteed to get a highly mouthy response back.

Texas Tech may have the best solution. I’ve read that their NIL provides all players with a $25,000 base. Earnings above that base become a player/sponsor deal like happens now.

This works for me, a total of 2.5 million a year for 100 players all NIL Base.
