Jaylen Carey to Portal

Pro sports > college sports.
I'd given up on pro sports years ago. Now I'm rethinking things. At least the professional sports have enforceable contracts and some degree of continuity and quality. What college sports have become...none of that applies. It's nothing but disappointment, frustration and a feeling of being disconnected from our teams. Yeah, apathy is rearing it's head in Knoxville again...at least with me.

The greedy entities that have brought us to this point had better come together and attempt to fix this mess before it goes beyond the point of being fixable. Ask NASCAR what happens when you alienate and lose you passion core of fans.

Either, we said we didn’t have a spot for him ( or reduced his NIL ) or someone offered a TON of money.
Can't see a team over spending for Carey. Kim Caldwell might, but other than that, I'm not seeing it. I think we're moving on.

Reading between the lines, we may be approaching the soft cap of the NIL spend available to the men's basketball program, there isn't enough room for modest boosts in NIL compensation while awaiting on the revenue share to kick in.

Barnes doesn't strike me as the type of guy that would look to clear the lineup each year with the time and effort and ongoing costs to get these types of players here "the kids that want to be at Tennessee".

Barnes isn't going out to sign the top shelf five star talent from the high school/AAU ranks nor the top tier players from the portal (as evidenced by his talent roster over the last three years), he's recruiting kids that want to be at Tennessee (i.e. Lanier, Gillespie) and the spin that Tennessee will not "overspend" may be Danny Dimes' explanation that Tennessee doesn't have that amount of money to spend.

We shall see what the talent looks like coming out of the portal this month in addition to the three (3) kids Barnes has solid commits from.

Incorrect. But sounds good.

Oh wow.. I didn’t expect this! But again, I trust that Rick Barnes is going to be very intentional in the portal!!
See what happens, not pointing at you but the system, reverend Barnes who at one time cursed like UConn Hurley or USC Dawn Staley on the court F this & F that. If they win we accept it, if they lose we exacerbate their foul tendencies to try to fire with cause. Rick has figured it out and will get the money to go buy players that care nothing about these fans but love the game. They use the University like the University uses them and the fans have to pay more so they can go get these players who ppl think they will be alumni like me some day and their agent is leveraging your University for more money or we leave, not like Pro ball because basically no rules NCAA has no power anymore. I'd say Barnes has got his associates out with feelers on the players he wants and he's decided these player can get to the next step versus the ones that were told they can come back with no NIL bump or a decrease. Its a total business and hard ball on and off the court. It has became what it has became, you either play the sleazy route or you get ran over, Barnes decided to stay in and so far he's pretty good at the survivor game.

Was just reading about Carey. This will be his 4th team in 4 seasons so he wears his welcome out after one season apparently. He was not worth more $ if that is what his demand to stay was. Barnes can get better.

He had a good run in the tournament. He should probably cash in on that while he can. This is probably his last year where he can make that kind of money, at least in the US

He's an enforcer and gets to the rim at will. The problem is, he is usually fouled and couldn't throw the ball in the ocean standing in a boat.

That sounds illegal unless you can get a transfer to sign a non-compete agreement, which sounds very costly.
Illegal? You got guys coming to schools taking the cash and then transferring out with the cash. Players taking the cash then sitting out in postseason.
That kind of sounds illegal too, how about a binding contract.

They’re leaving cause their reps are telling them the money is big out there. Some will get more. Some will get screwed

Estrella supposed to have a $3 mil deal with Indiana. Philips was told he’d make a lot more leaving.
Unfortunately, it’s that way in the business world too. If you want significant increases, you have to change companies. There’s a balance though. Job hopping every 2 years isn’t ideal, of course.

Anyone who tells me I don’t have the right to work because of a previous employment can have the bayonet.

Unconstitutionally illegal.

We need contracts
One time transfer rule, or a step down to a lower division.
If an athlete is paid money in advance and take the money and transfer out ( it has happened ) and their new destination is not willing to reimburse ( buyout) they should be sued for violation of contract.

Carey missed a ton of easy shots and free throws so don’t let the door hit you on your way out buddy

Sad but true. I worked to pay for a lot of other guys to fly first class, country club memberships & children to go to private school. I never made anything but a living until I started my own company.

Am I wrong but it seems to me Barnes ends up with two types of big men. The first is a "dawg" with very little real basketball skill. The second is a relatively skilled player who has not much "dawg" in him. Help me remember a player who had both qualities.
