I know he isn't ready or qualified yet but do yall think eventually he could be a great Tennessee coach? He needs a few more years to earn his stripes for sure but I think eventually he could be a great head coach.

No not head coach material imo, but he is everything you want in a assistant coach.

I really want to see him get an OC job at a school. I want to see if he can do a good job if he can I believe he is on the fast track to being a big time coach.

Why do you think he is not head coaching material? just curious as to the info you have that makes you base your opinion on him not ever being HFC material.

He's done a hell of a job coaching our RBs, but being a head coach requires an entirely different skill set. He's far from being proven enough to even consider for a HC position.

I have the same amount of info as you do stating a case for him being a HFC....zero! But I do have an opinion and that is he is a good running backs coach and good recruiter. Head coaches for the most part evolve from coordinator spots! He may be both one day but don't see it happening anytime soon. Maybe someday but not in this league.

exactly, he certainly isn't qualified right now but in 10 to 15 years I could see him being the head coach here. I really want to see him get an OC position and see what he can do. Remember Fulmer was originally an O-line coach.

Sure, maybe some day! I mean you can't just pick some guy up who only has a few years experience doing a small job and promote him to the most important position! I mean who on earth would do such a thing.....

I'm assuming you mean HC. He already is a great UT coach. But who knows? He has to put his time in, move up to OC and gain some accolades before these questions can be honestly asked.

(emphasis mine)

C'mon people, he's not asking if JG should replace CDD! Read, y'all. :)

Anyway, I have no idea what makes a great head coach vs a great position coach vs a great coordinator, for that matter. For instance, I'm great in my current position, but I would be abysmal a couple of rungs up because (1) I haven't the skill set, at least at the moment (2) I don't want to learn the skill set and (3) the things that a higher job would involve bore me to tears.

So where do great OC's come from? How do you successfully move from position coach to coordinator?
